    ME PRO: Or, how to lose $1100 on poker and philosophy picks
    This thread will serve as a bit of a diary I suppose as I (likely) piss away a little over a grand, or (hopefully) make a nice little run and some $$$.

    I've been meaning to take a serious stab at poker for a while now. I've had good success live and mixed results online. My plan of attack is as follows;

    Deposit $550 into poker funds...

    Will play in $22 ($20 + $2) sit-and-go tournaments exclusively. Primarily the 6 and 9 person variety, which pay as follows;

    6-man: 1st $78, 2nd $42
    9-man: 1st $90, 2nd $54, 3rd $36

    Will re-assess stakes if poker bankroll reaches over $1000.

    Deposit $550 into football funds...

    As tempted as I will be to bet college football and non-philosophy pro games, I'm sticking to my guns and going with my bread and butter. Will flat bet $55 to win $50 (hopefully can get better than -110, but assuming it for this model) on each philosophy pick.

    NOTE: I'm aware of how poor money management this is. A bad run of luck in either poker or football could easily wipe me out. 4% of my bankroll on every tourney and 10% of my bankroll on every philo-pick is fairly ill-advised. That said, its gambling, and I don't mind taking a little risk.

    Will keep regular updates, which will mostly be how the poker tourneys are faring.

    Good luck to everyone on a profitable season, and keep your fingers crossed for me!

          I'll have to check with the bosses, but I'm pretty sure we SBR mods in the office aren't allowed to wager offshores, so I will likely be keeping that stance publicly .

                  Dave---check out YouTube for some nice info regarding "how to play" tournaments. Just my 2 cents. Videos like these are priceless.

                        I have played a couple of 56player/ 128player sit and go and have final tabled numerous times (these are qualifiers so there is no prize for second place) just by being conservative. I was always short stacked suggesting I need to be a little more aggressive with my bigger hands and reading plays. Keep in mind I played my first game @ the Bash.

                          Right on man!

                          It's a great game. Playing conservative and getting a good understanding of pot odds is a great place to start and be competitive right away.

                                  I don't see you lasting very long betting 10% on NFL sides, the sharpest of all lines at the books. You WILL fall down to earth and I'm banking on it being this year.

                                      You could be right, no doubt... 63% ATS just doesn't make any sense on NFL lines.

                                      The nice thing though is that there are usually only 1-3 philosophy picks a week. So even if the first 6 weeks I'm something like 5-10, I'll still have $250 to hopefully catch a hot streak.

                                      Even if you consider 63% a fluke and put my true winning percentage on these at, say, 53%, still a good chance that I can avoid being totally wiped out.

                                      If I come storming out of the gate 0-10, as they say, so it goes.

                                        Good Luck. In reference to Nicky Jr's comments. There will always be a good luck as long as their is a stupid bettor. Take advantage of others mistakes.

                                          Most people enjoy trash-talking and what not for fun... Nicky Jr. will actually be rooting for me to lose real money. Sad world we live in. Going on past seasons, had I flat bet $55 to win $50...

                                          2005: 27 - 13 - 1 (.675) = +$635

                                          Here's hoping that '09 doesn't take a dramatic turn for the worse .

                                              Not only do you THINK I'll lose, but you HOPE I'll lose. And that's sad. There isn't anyone on the board, including you, that I hope loses money this year. That goes beyond childish forum board grudges.

                                              No matter though. Good luck this season.

                                                    Hmm, apparently ME PRO = 2nd place. Sucks that I haven't been able to catch any cards late, but I'd rather catch them early and cash anyway, so I'm not too upset. 4 for 4 on finishing in the money so far. And yes, I know Herman, I won't finish in the money every time.

                                                          Oops, me not pro... signed up for this goofy ultra-shortstacked tourney $12+.50 and lost on the first hand. Being OCD, I figured I'd lose the other $9.50 to get to a nice round number (22). Sat at a $0.10 / $0.25 table with $9.50 and got a nice hand to get up to $12.77. Bought into a $11+1 9 person, and you won't be shocked what place I finished...
