Usually yeah but you can often find those discounted at most grocery stores. There are many groceries stores that buy close to date items and sell them for dirt cheap. Things like sauce, where the expiration barely matters. Have you ever shopped at grocery outlet? Not a ton of inventory but huge deals because of aforementioned business plan.

Restaurant Depot often has one or two fish on sale per day. Sometimes 50% off. Very fresh fish. Not sure if they have one where you are. But it's worth it, especially when you're buying something like Chilean Seabass (if that's the sale that day). Usually you get a 6 ounce piece of chilean seabass in a restaurant for like 50 bucks.
