Pretty sure MTGox was the first. Not sure when they opened for business. I bought my first BTC there in 2011/12. Unfortunately I sold that BTC when it went up 150% in 2 weeks. If only I was a "hodler" back then...
Great news! I suppose you bought a few hundred dollars worth of bitcoin back in 2010? You rich now!
Buying btc over 10 years ago (and hodling) is like winning the lottery. Not one person here bought and held bitcoin for 10 years so the comparison is meaningless.
Gold and silver are also up a ton over the last 20 years, so what?
Buying bitcoin at $20k and hodling would not be a recommended strategy to becoming obscenely rich.
The bitcoin lottery train has left the station.

I bought some in early 2017 and have only sold a small amount. Everything seems to be working out just fine.

From Wikipedia re: Mt. Gox:
"Launched in July 2010, by 2013 and into 2014 it was handling over 70% of all bitcoin (BTC) transactions worldwide, as the largest bitcoin intermediary and the world's leading bitcoin exchange.
In late 2006, programmer Jed McCaleb thought of building a website for users of the Magic: The Gathering Online fantasy-based card game service, to let them trade "Magic: The Gathering Online" cards like stocks. In January 2007, he purchased the domain name mtgox.com, short for "Magic: The Gathering Online eXchange". Initially in beta release,[19] sometime around late 2007, the service went live for approximately three months before McCaleb moved on to other projects, having decided it was not worth his time. He reused the domain name in 2009 to advertise his card game The Far Wilds.
In July 2010, McCaleb read about bitcoin on Slashdot and decided that the bitcoin community needed an exchange for trading bitcoin and regular currencies. On July 18, Mt. Gox launched its exchange and price quoting service deploying it on the spare mtgox.com domain name."
McCaleb would go on to help start Ripple and then leave the project to start Stellar. I can remember people chatting about Bitcoin in computer and gaming forums back in those days. In those days, I didn't have any interest nor the extra cash laying around to invest - had no idea of Bitcoin's moonshot capability.
Coinbase came along in June 2012. I hear some say that wallets were scarce in those days. Now, there's tons of them.
Bought my first Bitcoin in September 2017.

What if it goes to $1M in the next 10 years? $20K for $1M sounds pretty good....

You have to remember that back then you could mine BTC on your own PC and make some decent progess as well. I had a cousin who mined a decent chunk of BTC on his spare PC, but sadly sold it all at a modest profit. Today the exchanges are the only easy way to acquire BTC

I'll say that once we hit 20k...we dip to 18k. 10% correction.

Lol, I don't even try to make predictions like that. Just enjoy watching the market.
If I have to guess...it doesnt break 20K and then starts dropping/"correcting" again.

Thanks Arky, I have a better understanding now about my inquiry. I know I could’ve just googled it but I like to hear real experiences from people on this forum.

If we had to explain such nuances to you it would be a waste of our time.

While at the gym today CNBC was on and they were doing a story about the IRS changing reporting requirements for bitcoin transactions. Apparently, now on the front page of form 1040 they ask you straight up if you traded any bitcoin this year. False answers can lead to fines and penalties.

Ya, they started that last year. I said "no" because I'm a buyer/hodler. I had a CPA tell me if no profits, it's safe to say no. I know many here are buying and cashing out all the time. If you get a 1099, you'll have to do something about that (i.e., pay your taxes). No 1099 and small potatoes? I wouldn't sweat it but I'm not a tax professional.
The IRS is all about the fines and penalties. Don't do the crime if you can't pay the fine. Seems that 20k is the magic number that makes the little weasels perk up....
I read somewhere that 9 million people totally avoid the IRS every year. That's a lot of people to keep up with. Makes you wonder how much manpower they would delegate to go find everyone fooling around with a little crypto....
