Avs signed Smyth and look what happened to the Avs. He is overrated because he was the star of the Oilers. Being a star implies being good, but being a star on the Oilers actually means you are an average player.

He scored 25 goals last year.. How is that "done?" He's never been the guy that had good hands.. He's the guy that will get you the garbage goals that nobody else gets.

Ryan Smyth brings way more than just "goal scoring." The guy has a boatload of intangibles and is a freakin' warrior. But I wouldn't expect an Avalanche fan to know anything about that.. I'm sorry that the days of just shelling out $$ in free agency are over.

A shame that you have to build through the draft now, huh?

Finally, some Kings talk on here, never thought I'd see the day VegasDave, lol. I've always been a "let's be patient" and build thru the draft Kings fan. But in a leauge where more teams make the playoffs than not, its Not working out. Time to spend some money which they wont do...but I like this sigining, its a defiant upgrade at a good price

ATS, don't lose faith in the rebuild now, it is finally reaching its fruition. If you look at cup winners, just about ALL of them have built from within. Yes they added some key pieces when the time was right, but the core of these teams was built through drafting/prospect development.

Now here come 20 posts about how stupid I am for thinking the Kings will ever be good... but whatever.

The Rangers have been trying to buy a cup for years. It just doesn't work. Patience!

While there isn't much doubt that Ryan Smyth is overpaid, I really don't see how he can't be penciled in as a productive 2nd line LW. Considering the Kings were way under the cap anyway, I'd rather have it going to a veteran 2nd line winger that brought a winning attitude/experience to a young locker room than spending it on nothing at all.

kings have some of the best young talent in the league, this trade is nothing but positive for them, Smyth will be great for the locker room and his gritty play will rub off on them.
