Kings by a mile.
Colorado signed Smyth to a VERY large contract owing him 6.75 million a year/5 years a few years back. Now they are in salary cap trouble and had to get out of cap hell by trading him.
The Kings meanwhile were about 10 mil under the cap, so they could easily afford the big contract. They gave up;
D Kyle Quincey - Good young D man, but only one full season under his belt so still "unproven". Had major back surgery this offseason. Wish him nothing but the best.
D Tom Preissing - Overpaid player that couldn't even crack the team last year, suffered from vertigo. Played in the minors.
5th round pick - Virtually nothing, will be something like the 135th overall pick.
In return, the Kings get a gritty, hard worker that is full of heart and can still put a puck in the net too. Some Kings fans are calling this "Our Pau Gasol trade".
From the Avalanche Message board:
"OH MY GOD
Kyle Quincey, D Tom Priessing and a 5th round pick?????? WOW"
"Wow we got boned on that trade, Sherman can go *** himself."
"OMG WE GOT NOTHING"
"This sucks."
"wowwww we could have got like at least jack johnson but no we always have to be screwed up when we do deals....why in the hell we know that the fans and the ppl in the management don't...good job sherman, nice start!!! wowww just can't believe this!"

Yep... no one around here takes my opinion on the Kings seriously because they think I'm "just a fan", but I thought they were a 50/50 shot to make the playoffs before this trade. After it, its looking a lot more like 70/30.
Love the +5500 you can still get them at to win the cup. They WON'T win the cup next year, but hedging opportunities galore with that ticket.

I don't much like Smyth's contract, but Preissing wasn't playing, and Quincey is a nobody who had a good half season. Very good deal for the Kings. Smyth will be a good locker room presence, and almost be a co-captain with Dustin Brown. Can't really put a dollar value on that type of stuff.
I think this puts the Kings over the top as far as making the playoffs, Dave.

Smyth's contract is indeed BRUTAL, but getting Preissing off the books helped with that alot, and the Kings could certainly afford it. By the time most of the kids in our system are due for raises in a few years, Smyth's current contract will be running out.
You hit the nail on the head with the intangibles. He can teach a guy like Brown how to be a better powerforward and how to lead the team. The Kings had good veterans on the back end, but up front Handzus and Williams were the closest they had. Smyth is a bonafide leader and even when he's not scoring he'll be hitting and working hard, which will hopefully rub off on the kids.

They could have had Hossa for $1.5 million less.......
If Smyth gives Kings 70/30 chance of making it them I guess Lupul gives the Ducks a 90/10 chance to make it lol

You and your anti-king shit is getting ridiculous blitty.
Secondly, Hossa was signed to a 12 year contract, Smyth is only on board for another three.
The Ducks were already very likely to make the playoffs... what does Lupul to the Ducks have to do with Smyth to the Kings?
Honestly man.

Relax Dave, I like the pick up and give props that you guys barely gave up anything to acquire Smyth.....I just found it comical at the percentage differences you stated for them to make the playoffs by just the addition of Smyth...I assure you im not anti-king...long live hockey in SoCal

Smyth scored 26 goals last year
Find me the part where I said he would dominate this year... all I said was that he was a nice fit and a scoring left winger. How is that praying?

You want to call me a hockey genius?
Find me a single article that says the Colorado Avalanche got the better end of this deal. While your at it, go check all the Los Angeles Kings boards/news sites that are elated and all of the Colorado Avalanche boards/news sites that feel like they are the victims of highway robbery.
You want to rip on the Kings and say they aren't a playoff team next year. That's fine. Here's a few places where you should start.
- Kyle Quincey was the quarterback of the team's second powerplay unit. With him gone, you have Doughty, Stoll, and Johnson who can play the point on the PP. Who will fill this hole?
- Justin Williams is being counted on to be a 1st line right winger and a 30 goal contributor. He hasn't been healthy in 3 years. What's to say his injury woes won't continue, or he won't have trouble finding his old stride?
- We have a 2nd-year goaltender in Jonathan Quick. While he was strong last year, he is unproven, and now teams have a scouting report on him and may exploit weaknesses. If this happens, the Kings don't have a veteren netminder to fall back on.
You bring up ANY of these valid points, and you have my respect. Instead, you decide to bash a guy nicknamed Captain Canada as he is one of the most respected players in the league, a true warrior. NO ONE said he is what he used to be. But he is the 2nd LW on this team behind Frolov, and a 2nd liner that can score 25 goals but much more importantly be a great on and off ice leader to the team is valuable. This isn't me making shit up here; like I said, go find a single article backing you up that he is washed up and the Kings didn't get the better end of the deal.
No witty retorts. No bullshit. Go find something to back you up other than baseless speculation, and then report back. Thanks.

He is overpaid at 6.5 million. But the Kings unloaded a pretty bad contract (Tom Preissing) in return, and gave up nothing of real value to the Avalanche. The Kings are far under the salary cap, so it really isn't a big deal if the overpay one person. If he scores 20 goals, and gets 50-60 points, and provides veteran leadership it is a fine addition. What is the downside of this deal? How would Smyth's salary be better allocated?

I agree it is a bad contract. The Kings only added 3 million in payroll, nothing ridiculous. And they really aren't in any cap trouble whatsoever. I wouldn't call him washed up, he is good for 25 + 35.
But agree to disagree.

You still haven't answered element's valid question; how would this salary be better allocated?
This isn't a panic move at all. Nor is it the answer to all of the Kings problems. Nor does anyone think this makes us a cup team next year.
But the Kings are still comfortably under the cap... would having been even more under the cap without Smyth been preferable?
And while I don't disagree he's on the decline, what exactly are you basing the he's washed up thing on?
Is your argument that he only had 59 points so he's washed up now? Taking a look at his point production every season of his career since he became an every day player pre-lockout since 96-97:
61, 33, 31, 54, 70, 50, 61, 59
How is last season's 59 points not right on target with the rest of his career?
Last year Ryan Smyth's 59 points was 21st among left wingers. 30 teams times top 2 lines = 60 left wingers, and he was in the top 25. Even if he takes a logical regression next year and ends up with only 50 points (say 20 goals 30 assists), last year that would have been good for 30th among left wingers. How is he not, at the very least, an effective 2nd liner?
And how do you measure all the other intangibles he brings?
Your response to all of this, of course, is going to be more nonsense. Because no one in forumville can ever admit that they are wrong or keep a discussion/argument from being reduced to name-calling and petty insults. Here is a fact/stat-based response. If you feel the need to respond, please keep yours fact/stat-based too.
