It means there are a whole bunch of " role players " who play a position based on the funds available by that club. When you play The German, French and Spanish national team, you are playing against the very best those teams have to offer. Add up the net worth ( transfer value if you wish ) of the starting 11 for the countries you mentioned. I assure you that they would be the highest paid team going.

By your logic Thomas Mueller is a better player than both Messi and Ronaldo because he scored 10 goals in the last two WCs.
Come on, neither of these guys are playing alone against the best teams in the world, both of them have other 10 team mates on the field.
