And this one just ended, and this one ended 3rd, very close! (and very close to those who placed it, there were only 2 spots for Place so it didn't win and didn't place neither).

That's the thing. You can't really explain it when a horse doesn't figure and that's why he goes off at astronomical odds, but they do win sometimes. That's the nature of the sport. A good trip, some bad luck for your opponents combined with a horse that wakes up on the right side of the stall that day can lead to surprising finishes. You have to remember that the connections are trying to prep the horses to win (usually). Behind the scenes, they may be trying new training techniques, different feed, etc.

It finished 3rd and Place was only for 1st & 2nd - makes any sense?

Took a long time for this race to settle, because of close 2 winners, it settled now and I barely got this in live from the next race:

I could have matched it for 10 EUR if I had offered 400 initially and not 220ish or so, this is what happens when you offer a too low price - you don't get much in return.
