South Africa is one of the richest country's in the world and their soccer team is consistently horrible. Nigeria is a very wealthy country that funds their soccer teams and they are consistently horrible. Their are many African soccer leagues and black soccer teams in Africa and Latin America, none are very good. That's right. Africans do not have the number of leagues to develop world class elite soccer teams. That takes identifying every single kid in Africa capable of playing elite level soccer and then developing them for their entire lifetime with coaching each year of their life and then multiple years of professional level development. Its also wrong to say that Africa was dominated or colonized by Europe in any significant way. With the exception of South Africa, most of Africa was independent or controlled by Islamic rulers for centuries. There was essentailly no European presence in Africa of any significance until the late 19th century and the Congress of Berlin in 1884, and after world war II most European countries abandoned their colonies by the mid 1970s - the exception being England in South Africa. Africa is poor because of poor leadership and a lack of resources, not European colonialism. Slavery occurred because Africans enslaved each other and sold slaves to European countries, European armies never once entered Africa during the slave years because of the difficulty of sailing into Africa given how few major rivers there are.

Do you understand that if you find an All-Star baseball player in Peoria, Illinois you must train him for up to 5 years to get him to the major leagues. You have to hire players of similar ability that will never reach the major leagues to play against him so that he can develop his skills. You have entire leagues of these players that exist only to develop two or three players.

The development of elite level athletes is an enormous undertaking. Africans do not make these types of efforts to develop athletes. If they did, Africans would be elite level soccer players.
