MrMonkey, looking at about $150 or so assuming you already have a good propane cooker and large (at least 8 gallon size) cooking pot. Here's a LINK to the store we buy our recipe kits from, and that link shows a startup kit for $83 plus you will need to spend another $40 or so on a good glass carboy. From there, it depends on the recipe you're buying. We've been making the Boddingtons and Old Speckled Hen lately, and they run from $35-$45 for a 5-gallon mix. That site's pretty good and they keep the costs down pretty well. Can get whatever you order shipped to you via UPS for eight bucks. I bought a new 6½ gallon carboy last week so we can age two batches at the same time, plus got an OSH recipe kit, and they shipped it all to me for $7.99 and it got to me overnight at that price (of course, I'm just down the road from Austin so that obviously helps).

Also need to take into account where you live when you're brewing your own stuff. If you're in high altitudes, say above about a half-mile in elevation, you will need to take that into account as far as your yeast and your fermenting/aging time.

Do you need a cellar to age the beer? Do you need to be doing the cooking and aging in a dark room? I'm thinking of trying making my own beer some time.

Budweiser is terrible. In fact, Bud brewers should not be allowed to extract water from any well to produce it (the water taste better). The simple fact its brewed cold and shipped cold makes my stomach turn. I wonder how many people over the last 100 years hate beer because the very first beer they ever tasted was Bud. Is it the rice? Is it the beechwood chips that really do nothing more then kill beer flavor? Maybe its the cold on cold technique so many American mega breweries utilize. Maybe its the fact it caters to drinkers who don't give a shit what the beer taste like because they just want to get drunk. Anyway you spin Bud, its a horrible tasting beer. The Belgians should do the right thing and kill the brand for the good of mankind.

Jordan is right, more it is how good you advertise and how much you spend. Bud has always been A on advertising F on taste. No matter how much you want to believe its a good tasting beer you are only avoiding its reality. Its no longer an American beer and it never tasted good. Like MrMarket stats, its piss water.
