I think for me 'The Catch' in 1982 by Dwight Clark beating my favorite team at the time. The Niners beat the Cowboys that day and I cried. Keith Smart 'The Shot' hitting the baseline shot giving Indiana the NCAA title in 1987 is up there and also Dale Earnhardt 'The Crash' getting killed in 2001 stands out. They all have something in common as my fan-ship for all has decreased in some way. When Dallas fired Tom Landry I despised Jones and the Cowboys, when Indiana fired Coach Knight I despised Miles and the Hoosiers. Since Earnhardt passed my liking for NASCAR has decreased as well.

    1982 - Cowboys

    1987 - Hoosiers

    2001 - Dale Earnhardt Sr

I'll NEVER forget the Montreal Canadiens losing 4 straight games in the first round of the 2008/2009 Stanley Cup Playoffs to the Boston Bruins.

Dolphins beat Jets to go to SuperBowl. AJ Duhe intercepted Richard Todd for a pick 6. I was at the Orange Bowl that day and stormed the field after the win.

Showing my age - but when I was a kid I saw Harvey Haddix pitch 13 perfect innings against the Milwaukee Braves. Then an error, a walk, and a Joe Adcock double and he lost 1-0 to Lew Burdette.

For me, the 1987 World Series game 7 when the Twins won their 1st World Series. Also game 6 & 7 of the 1991 World Series, 2 of the best games I have seen.

Any Yankees game. A special one that comes to mind is the game where Brett Boone hit the game winning HR. There was magic in the stadium that night.

Also when Carmelo led Syracuse to a NCAA championship.

For me, this topic is all about Canada defending our hockey honor on the international stage. Highlight moments:

                                                      Paul Henderson in '72.
Mike Bossy tip of the Paul Coffey shot from the point in OT '84.
Gretzky to Lemieux with Murphy as the decoy '87.

Other great, great memories which didn't have quite the same defining moments:

Gold Medal in Salt Lake City 2002.
                                                      Gold Medal Canada Cup 1976
                                                      Gold Medal Canada Cup 1991
                                                      Gold Medal World Cup 2004

David Ortiz against the Yankees in the 2004 ALCS. Red Sox winning the series after being down 3 games to none. David Ortiz in game 4 and game 5 hitting game winners in each.

I was just a kid as well and only knew about that one the day after in the papers, but sure as hell remember that one. Here's another one you probably remember and tell me if it was about the same for you:

Bill Mazeroski's homer to end the 1960 World Series. Up until that point in my life, I had listened to my dad and uncles and all their friends go on and on and on about Bobby Thomson's homer in the 1951 NL playoffs. Maz' homer gave me something to remember and talk about for years.

A few more on my list:

                                                                  • Nov 20, 1978: Oilers beat Dolphins 35-31 on MNF, was at the Astrodome for that one, an amazing back-&-forth game capped by Earl Campbell's 81-yd TD run in the 4th quarter when everyone -- E V E R Y O N E -- in the stadium knew he was about to get the ball.
                                                                  • 1980 NLCS: Even though my Astros fell to the Phillies in the best of 5 series, some of the best baseball I've seen, and I attended Game 3-4-5 at the Astrodome.
                                                                  • Chris Burke's homer in the 18th inning of Game 4 of the 2005 NLDS. About a week later, being so disappointed when Albert Pujols homered to win Game 5 of the NLCS, even though Houston won two nights later for their first NL Pennant, broke my heart that after following the team since its inception in 1962, I was robbed by Pujols of being at the stadium when they could have clinched that NL Flag.

Fenway wasn't all pink hat yuppy fans, but you had the Dominicans waving their flags, and the drunk micks in the stands, great times.
