My buddy just spoke with NHL Public Relations in Toronto, he asked about the situation and they told him they are backing the zebra 100%. If you watch the replay, the whistle blows after it is behind the goal line. Hockely was buried by the NFL, that is what is to be done for this prick.

You boys should just stick to the NBA. The refs never blow any calls over there.

I understand human error, but the ref who blew the whistle didn't even bother to move to put himself in a better position to see the puck. As a ref you need to move to follow play, not just blow the whistle when you lose sight of the puck.

I realize why he was not in position, it was because it was a fluke bounce that the numb nut Duck lost the puck and it was directed out in front, but don't make the call if you're not in position.
This is the NHL's explanation. Real thorough...
NHL responds to waved-off goal in Wings-Ducks' Game 3
Dave Dye / The Detroit News
Anaheim, Calif. -- E.J. McGuire, series manager for the NHL, served as the spokesman for referee Brad Watson following Tuesday’s game in which the Red Wings’ apparent tying goal by Marian Hossa with 1:04 remaining was negated by Watson’s quick whistle. McGuire said Watson wasn’t available for comment.
McGuire’s explanation of the call: "First off, as any of us watch on a replay, it’s easy to make the correct call. In the case tonight, the official was down along the goal line. He was moving forward toward the net to try to get a look at where the puck was. When he couldn’t see the puck, all referees’ instructions are to blow the whistle and blow the play dead. A combination of the black puck and the black pants may have been a factor. But when he didn’t see the puck, he blew the whistle."
On whether, in retrospect, a mistake was made: "He didn’t make a mistake. In hindsight, if he had a slow-motion camera to review it, he may not have (blown the play dead). He did what all officials are instructed to do. Blow the whistle when they don’t see the puck. And he didn’t see the puck. He said he talked to the players on the ice. It’s an emotional game. He wanted to explain to the players on the ice, as he saw it, the puck was out of sight and he blew the whistle. The assumption was that the puck was covered."

This happens all the time in all levels of hockey. Refs are (rightly) instructed to blow the whistle as soon as they lose sight of the puck. Otherwise goalies would get destroyed trying to cover the puck. Sucks that it happened in such an important game and situation but you can't blame the rules.

He made a split second call as he was trained to do. He has to blow the whistle if he loses sight of the puck. Bad call yes but he never intentionally fixed the game or games like the NBA dude. It sucks for Detroit fans for sure but that is the human element part of the game.
Good thing is Detroit isn't out of it

it was a shitty call no question. Humans make mistakes. He only followed the rule that says he must blow the whistle once he loses sight of the puck. Bad call , yes, but look at all the penalty calls throughout the game/series which lead to goals. Some of those calls are just as bad and change the outcome of the game.
None of the calls are were that bad. And its fine if he has to blow the whistle when he loses sight of the puck. If his eyesight/ability to follow the puck is that bad he shouldnt be a ref.

I'm glad you guys can decide who deserves to win games. Remeber the Carolina/NJ series? Remember Carolina scoring with .2 secends left? Remember when the Hurricanes were losing game 7 with 1:30 left to play and scored twice to win?
Pretty rediculous to say a team doesn't deserve to win because they were down late in a game. Maybe Anaheim didn't deserve to win because all they had to do was keep the puck out of their net at the end of the game and they couldn't (withouth the help of the refs). Heck they couldn't even clear the zone after Detroit pulled Osgood.
