#2there is an error on your computer, try to restart in normal config. and you should be okay. If it is a new computer than it probably has Windows **** which has many errors. That is why they are going away from the softwareComment -

#4that would be the blue screen of death, the virus runs in the start up configuration, you need to boot your PC is safe mode and access the boot options( run>msconfig) change the boot options to networking options only, from this point not absent applications will load including the virus pathway, from here you can either run malware bytes to take away the virus or you can save all your documents onto a flash drive and reinstall xp, up to you, thanksComment -

#15I had a restart problem for a while and thought it was a virus but later found out the PC/Laptop was overheating and all I did was get an air spray and spray the fan and it worked like a charm and ran much quieter. I now do this like every 4 months because dust build up.Comment -

You should run hardware diagnostics which should be available as one of the startup options if you hit F2 key right after you turn the computer on and before Windows XP starts loading.
Also, a bit too late but may help in the future. Another thing to try from Windows startup menu besides Safe Mode is Last Known Good Configuration option.Comment -

So far you have gotten some very solid advice in this thread but it appears your problem may be a bit more serious than what we diagnose/solve in this thread. Any questions feel free to PM me I'm pretty apt at solving these things.Comment -

Most likely your hard drive failed but that needs to be verified by hardware diagnostics. If that is the case you can get a replacement for about $50. Then, you are going to need Dell CD.Comment -

#28Oh, I thought it's your laptop. That changes things but by very little. The difference is that you are going to get a normal Windows CD instead of Dell branded. You should be able to get one from hp.com for a nominal fee. The hard drive is going to cost a little less and it is not going to be a problem replacing it.
For starters, get this or something like this:
Take out your desktop HD. Use the cables set to connect it to any working computer. Once you see that drive in My Computer, right-click it, select Properties, Tools and run Error-checking. If the drive is defective then see above. If it is fine then buy a new computer. Repairing it is not worth it.Comment -

If that dosent work then you need to do a full reinstall. You will have to find a floppy that will reformat your C: drive since Im sure the virus has disabled your optical drives.Comment -
