Planning first Vegas trip - couple of questions for regulars/locals

Matt, I am not a Vegas expert by any means but my experience has been that if you book directly with the hotel they are more likely to offer upgrades and free nights based on play, compared to booking with expedia, etc. Last time I went we stayed at the Monte Carlo and when we got there I asked if there were any suites available and there was and they gave it to me for an additional $25 a night compared to hundreds if I wouldve booked it on my own. I try and keep all my casino action at one place instead of spreading it out and also do the old switcheroo. I will cash in say $1k at the BJ table, get $250 in green and rest in black, and then slowly put the blacks in my pocket and then break down the greens to red so that they see me cash in $1k but then walk away with less... I am not sure if this works but I have always been taken care of...

That really doesn't work anymore unless you have a lazy pit crew. The only thing that matters for your comps are how much are you betting on average and how long your betting. You can buy in for a $Million dollars but if you never bet it won't mean chit but they might watch you a lot closer. Some casino's have gone to electronic comping where they know exactly how much you bet because the table is weighted so every bet get's counted. This hurts the guy that bet's a high average bet but at times lowers his bet when the boss isn't looking or the guy that slow hands where he goes to the bathroom a lot and has a high average bet but doesn't play as many hands per hour.

I agree that I wouldn't use expedia, travelocity, etc. for Vegas outside of buying a plane ticket. Where they get you is in the per person charges. You can call the hotel direct and best of all is to transfer to a casino host. They will set you up with an account if you don't already have one and will give you the casino rate which is always lower than the hotel rate. You can also use expedia, hotel.com etc to check the hotel rates as backup. Once your setup by the host you can ask them what action you need for a room/food comp.

I still think it's much more fun to stay at several casino's. Sure it's a pain to move but you experience different places and you can build comps at more than one place. I also don't like to play in just one casino nor bet in one book. I tend to do better mixing it up instead of sitting in one place giving back my money. Since your there for 2 weeks try staying 3 or 4 nights per hotel.

Since you'll have a rental car, you got to go to Hoover Dam. It's a very short trip but worthwhile. If you really want to adventure, you could make a 4 hour run to Los Angeles for a couple of days or San Diego. A weekend in LA would be a blast and the eye candy at the beaches and clubs are classic.

We've actually never done that on purpose, but we've been roommates for a bit and have got a couple of surprise hugs from the wrong GFs.

Thinking of going the "working girls" route while we're there, but Vegas seems to be filled with bait-and-switch scams. That's one area where I'll need guidance from knowledgeable locals.

Cool, good info. I'm used to doing that with rental cars (book "economy", upgrade to "luxury" for peanuts) - guess the same principle applies to hotels. Will be looking for some kind of suite with either 2 bedrooms or at least separate rooms, for the purpose mentioned above.

Also Matt, if you price shop, I believe most of the hotels are offering the best posted rates if you book direct. For example, my trip in may, expedia, travelocity, etc had airfare and 4 nights for $560 cheapest... I booked through the Monte Carlo direct, got $20 in free slot play, free buffets, and other various stuff for $310 and my airfare was $210. So I saved $40 plus got some misc. add ons direct from the casino...

What do you mean by "pay up front"? Should I book my room by contacting the hotel directly? I do plan on playing at least two ~50k sittings during my stay there, and I know the variance and expected loss of VP in general, thanks to Microgaming and the slew of online casino bonuses that were around a couple of years ago. Yes. I would suggest a Harrahs property, probably RIO. The rooms are all very nice suites. You're a little of the strip next to Palms and the Goald Coast.
With that kind of action you'll become a diamond in a day. (ask about it at slot club) This will give you and a guest free access to the lounge, spa and other things. There's no way they don't comp your room.
However, double check VPfree. As far as I know they still have 9/6 jacks at $5 minimum in the high limit room. All lower denominations are horrible short pays.

I left my money in a safety deposit box in the cage so I didnt mix up my gambling money and spending money. They give you a key for it and youre all set... I went for 6 days once and it felt like a month... Good luck with 2 weeks!!

Probably won't be staying on the strip for the whole 2 weeks. This is also a general SW USA trip, which my bro and I have never visited. We might get bored with Vegas at one point and decide to go for a quick road trip to LA, I dunno. I'm definitely planning for 2 weeks in the area - I wanna get a glimpse of the daily grind of a sports bettor in Vegas, among other things.

Either way, I will be betting on sports every day, whether offshore or in Vegas, so I need to come up with a plan on how to split up my bankroll.

You're aware that this place is near Reno and not Vegas right? For those looking at this option it seems like this would be the biggest determinant unless they want to take a two day road trip across the desert to get there and back when they are similar options alot closer...

There are also other advantages as well that help justify the added expense of this type of option (such as greatly lowering your chances of acquiring a long term/permanent medical reminder of the experience...)



Girls at brothels are required to get very frequent medical screenings, do checks/screenings of each client, and are required to always use protection... I guess you could always just ask and take the word of the stranger you pick up at the buffet or the big six wheel for "free" as you're in Vegas to gamble anyhow...

You don't have to go all the way up to Reno for a brothel. There is one in Pahrump called the Chicken Ranch, which about a 30-40 minute drive from Vegas.

Update - I'm pissed off.

My bro dropped a bomb on me last night - he's switching jobs in 2 weeks and the new boss won't allow him to take any vacation before next year. Barring a last-minute replacement - which seems unlikely with 3 weeks to go - it looks as though I will be making the trip on my own. There's no way I'm not making the trip as I've been waiting so long to take some time off, but I'll need to change a bunch of plans.

Serious question - what is a single guy to do by himself in and around Vegas for a full week? Anyone ever done it without feeling like a loser?

Honestly Matt I wish I went by myself the few times I have been... When I go to Vegas I am there to gamble and do everything that is closely related to gamble. I am not there to go see the stupid lions at the MGM or guy get a $1 margarita at some shit hole. I met a ton of people playing poker and hanging in the sportsbooks when I could convince my gf to go shopping. You will definitely be able to meet people, the pool at the Monte Carlo had a ton of women there during the day also...

Its funny reading your post because this past weekend my gf told me she was going to Puerto Rico with her friends and I told her THANK GOD, so now I can finally go to Vegas by myself and do whatever I want on my own schedule!
