Had you left him off because you forgot about him, that would be one thing. But admitting that you were aware of "shanty-mania" and then not including hm because you thought said mania was not noteworthy, that is getting personal bias involved; exactly what you accused JJ of doing.

    I rest my case. Proceed.
Maybe he already knows he is listed in the poll under a different name.

See beyond the tip of your nose Dave.

I don't think that VegasDave is going to get RogueScholar's vote.

This is a wonderful bit of incisive analysis. I don't want to minimize that. It is a well put-together argument.

I just feel that someone needs to step in with a gentle reminder that we are talking about a candidate list for some poster-of-the-month voting on a dopey website which, I don't believe I am exaggerating when I say, is the most trivial thing in the history of the world.

Oh completely agree... it is an "award" that doesn't even really exist.

Sadly, I don't have anything better to do. I wish I did

Come, come Mudcat. BuddyBear and his committee used to take the award very seriously.

The perceived flaw in my poll is nothing more than a representative function of the impossibility of eliminating bias from any sort of finite nominations process organic to human attempts at democracy.

To place this is the context of a sports scenario, Shanty represents the 66th team which fails to make in into the 65-team field of March Madness. Similarly in our Presidential Primaries in the United States, only two major candidates emerge from a field of well-qualified candidates (and some that are thoroughly unqualified) to represent a very broad spectrum of political leanings. Some would say that the electorate narrows them down, but in reality it is the minuscule subset of the electorate that finances elections that winnow our choices down to two. They do so on the basis of nothing more than their own personal bias.

The fact that I chose to include the opinions of anyone who wished to share them is what separates my method from JJ's. Personal bias can never be completely removed from any human endeavour. The best you can hope for is a system that allows said bias not to destroy the functionality of the process. I accomplished this with the Write-In option, and the fact that a write-in candidate leads the poll validates the fact that my fail-safe is functioning exactly as it should.

If I had only allowed my personal nominees to count, then I would indeed be guilty of the grievous harm to the forum that Dave alleges. Instead, he's just attempting to nit-pick my thread because, in his own admission, he has nothing better to do. I admire Dave for his honesty regarding his motives, and I pity him for the reality that it presents. I believe my poll represents a much more equitable method for ascertaining the popular Poster of the Month than was attempted by JJ, and I refuse to apologize for it.

God help me if I ever try this again, but if I do, I'll be sure to include a public nomination to the process. In the meantime, if you're still reading this, God bless and keep you.

This is probably one of my biggest pet peeves out of anything people say on the forum... this superiority that you pity me or are better then me because I am bored and spending time on SBR? We all spend a great deal of time on SBR. I expect better from you than this. When you disagree with someone, you are allowed to write elaborate and precise responses, but one someone disagrees with you and does the same, they are deserving of your pity?

You put a poll together for poster of the month, I had an opinion on it that I chose to share. In reference to my response to Mudcat, he was saying that my argument was very solid, but kind of pointless considering the subject matter. When I said I had nothing better to do, I was referring to my detailed posts, NOT nit-picking in your thread. I nit-picked because I believe you left off a name that should have been on there - that had nothing to do with boredom.

Two threads created nominating this guy (for what I still don't think is an actual award? ), neither started by him. I'd love to see two threads nominating each of the posters you included. Again, if you had said "oh, that's right, I forgot to put him on there", it wouldn't have been noteworthy. You refering to it as shanty-mania (mania: excessive excitement or enthusiasm), but saying he wasn't included because you didn't think he was notewothy; if you were aware of the excessive excitement and enthusiasm, how does he not crack the top 9?

Again, this is all wildly trivial, and now you pity me even more for typing out another response, I suppose.

Once again, I am surprised by your response. You are one of the most well written posters at SBR, and you have weighed in with plenty of well thought out and well written posts on lots of trivial subjects. But when I disagree with a selection you didn't make (remember, all my original post said was "You didn't include shantystar? ", pretty innocent) and respond in a respectful manner to your rebuttals, you now pity me for having nothing better to do. Nice.

Alright, I have to open by saying the pity remark was a low-blow and I regret saying it, you're absolutely right that it was a low blow. You and I have had a ton of great in-depth discussions on, you're right again, mostly trivial matters and by all rights you should pity me too. My frustration came not from the merits of the argument, and you made some good points, but on the very fact that you felt compelled to make them.

It's one of the worst kept secrets on SBR that I think the forum has gone way downhill in recent months. One of the biggest underpinnings for these thoughts of mine is that the Staff seem to take the forum so seriously. My sole purpose in starting this thread was to stir up some drama, a la BBD, for people to pick someone other than Sammy for this ephemeral POM honor and hopefully get some bickering and arguing going on.

When I started posting this summer it was because the inter-personal drama had reached what I thought was a fever pitch and I wanted to join in. I often criticized BBD for being very base in how he incited all the drama, but there's no denying that I treasured the end result. I remember too many threads to number that ended up being filled with such salacious personal attacks, that I couldn't even post a reply for I felt that anything I had to say would be, at best, inelegant. My thread this morning was an attempt to relive those days and just get people arguing and hurling insults pell-mell for the sake of being involved in the "issue."

I have to confess that I was completely unaware of either of the threads you linked. I read one thread involving Shanty and once I saw the dismal lack of grammar and coherent thought I truly wrote off anything else having to do with him, to the point that I put mentions of him on a mental "ignore" function. Of course the results in my own poll prove that I was indeed wrong to fail to include him, and quite hypocritical in not just taking ownership of my oversight.

I don't pity you in all reality, I pity myself for clinging to SBR in order to get my fix of drama and mischief. When you live in a place so small it's called a village, you can only cause so much drama and mischief before you end up a hermit. In lieu of creating that life for myself, I choose to indulge those vices here, in the hopes that they can be accomplished harmlessly and be taken in the lightest manner possible.

I'm disappointed in myself for stooping to insult you, a good friend, in such a public manner just to win an argument that wasn't worth winning. You are one of the best people I've ever debated with, and I hope that we have many more in the future. Please accept my heartfelt apologies for dealing with you in such a high-handed and condescending fashion, you deserve better. I've been bitter at Dozer for being precisely so detestable in how he dealt with me, and I guess this was a good way to learn that there's never a good reason to stoop to such a low level.

                            To summarise:

RS is very sorry and wants to make up. Reading between the lines, I think he's offered to bottom for VD.

I haven't looked at jj's but I agree. This is the real poll.

That poll is for people at a Paris Hilton level. This poll is for the cool kids. That poll is for people who like keys jangled in front of their face. This poll is for the cogniscenti.

In short, this poll rules. That poll drools.
