    135th Kentucky Derby

    It’s Wide Open.

“Nobody knows nothing,” is a saying that has been ascribed to everyone from movie executives to economists. It is particularly true of horseplayers trying to divine the winner of the Kentucky Derby on the first Saturday May in the early days of March.

It is the reason bookmakers in Las Vegas offer future bets at long odds, on any and every 3-year-old to win America’s greatest horse race.

In January, holding tickets at 125-1 on the Derby prospects Shafted and Poltergeist seemed smart. In February, however, after each ran up the track in the Robert B. Lewis and Southwest Stakes, the colts were off the Derby trail and the tickets worthless.

Still, horseplayers know better than most that a) the more you guess the sooner you’re going to be right, and b) everyone only remembers your winners. The New York Times falls in line with this philosophy as well, and offers our first list of Derby contenders.

With the Triple Crown prep races at the halfway point, some familiar archetypes are arriving on the Derby landscape. In the Fountain of Youth at Gulfstream Park on Saturday, Quality Road romped to a four-and-a-quarter-length victory and became this year’s version of the lightly raced, late-blooming contender in the mold of last year’s Derby winner, Big Brown.

Quality Road won his first race last November at Aqueduct and generated plenty of buzz about his talent and speed. His father, the miler Elusive Quality, sired the 2004 Derby winner, Smarty Jones. But in Quality Road’s next race, an allowance on Jan. 10 at Gulfstream, he was battling a cough and looked ordinary in finishing second.

After his victory on Saturday, his trainer, Jimmy Jerkens, tried to tamp expectations. He has no idea if his colt can handle the Derby’s mile-and-a-quarter distance.

“A one-turn mile is still basically a sprint and a lot different than going two turns,” he said.

Later Saturday, in the Sham Stakes at Santa Anita Park, the odds-on favorite, The Pamplemousse, led every step of the way. As impressive as his six-length victory was, The Pamplemousse will get more ink in the coming weeks for his name and ownership group.

Pamplemousse means grapefruit in French and the colt is named after Pamplemousse Grille, a high-end restaurant across the street from Del Mar racetrack in California. Jeffrey Strauss, the restaurant’s owner-chef, owns part of the horse with Alex Solis II, whose father rides The Pamplemousse.

“I’ve never ridden anything like him,” said Solis, a highly regarded rider who has never won a Derby but has finished second three times. “He has such a high cruising speed and he’s getting more and more amazing. He has such a good mind and he was real relaxed the whole way.”

At the top of the list, however, are two colts whose credentials are rock solid but perhaps a little boring. Old Fashioned has beaten all comers in all four of his races, including an impressive performance the mile-and-an-eighth Remsen as a 2-year-old and a victory in the Southwest Stakes.

He is trained by the highly skilled Larry Jones, whose Hard Spun ran second in the 2007 Derby to Street Sense. Old Fashioned, a son of Unbridled’s Song, is training and racing at Oaklawn Park in Hot Springs, Ark., a path that had been successful for Triple Crown horses like Smarty Jones and Curlin.

Old Fashioned is the deserving early favorite, but that does not mean he is going to wear the blanket of roses on May 2. The No. 2 horse on our list is Pioneerof the Nile, who is being prepped in stout, old-school fashion by the three-time Derby winner, Bob Baffert. Pioneerof the Nile, a son of Empire Maker, has already raced six times, recording three victories including the Grade I Cash Call Futurity as a 2-year-old and the Robert . Lewis Stakes.

What Baffert, and all the California horses, are up against is whether their performances on synthetic tracks will transfer to dirt on the first Saturday in May. Baffert does not particularly like the new surfaces, but he does not plan on traveling east with Pioneerof the Nile — perhaps to the Wood Memorial — to test the colt on dirt.

Instead, he says he will take Pioneerof the Nile to Churchill Downs early and let him adjust to the new surface in the mornings.

Baffert, who is eligible for the Hall of Fame and should be a unanimous selection after all his success, also ascribes to the “nobody knows nothing” theory of picking a Derby winner.

“All I know for sure is that The Nile will run all day and has developed a terrific kick and is improving every day,” he wrote in an e-mail message. “Really love his chances. He is the real deal. Needs racing luck being that he comes from off of it but has tactical speed to stay in range. Love this guy.”

A Derby Favorite? So Far, It Seems, There Isn’t One.

Horsemen and horseplayers often think alike. After a weekend of Triple Crown prep races, it is clear that both constituencies do not believe they have seen the likely Kentucky Derby winner. The evidence?

On Saturday at Oaklawn Park, Win Willy ran down the previously undefeated Old Fashioned at 56-1 to capture the Rebel Stakes. On Sunday, his owner, Jerome Myers, and trainer, Mac Robertson, said they had turned down a $3 million offer for the colt, not bad for a horse that cost $25,000 as a yearling and was not even nominated for the Triple Crown.

The more seasoned Derby contenders that have stamped their ticket to Churchill Downs, it appears, do not intimidate anyone. Horseplayers, too, are underwhelmed by what they have seen.

The 2009 Kentucky Derby Future Wager pool that closed Sunday offered a chance to bet on 23 horses, including the Louisiana Derby winner Friesan Fire and the San Felipe winner Pioneerof the Nile. Horseplayers, however, essentially sided with none of the above.

They made “all others” the 9-2 favorite. By doing so, they expressed little confidence in Friesan Fire, who closed at 8-1 despite crushing eight others by seven and a quarter lengths in Louisiana on Saturday.

Perhaps more impressive was that Friesan Fire dominated a very good field on a rain-soaked track, proving that he could handle almost any surface. Still, it was not enough to displace Old Fashioned as the star of Larry Jones’s barn — at least in the eyes of horseplayers, who made that colt 8-1 as well in the future pool.

“Friesan Fire just loved it out there,” said Jones’s wife and assistant, Cindy, who saddled the colt in Louisiana. “Now we don’t have to worry about what the weather is like on Derby Day.”

Bettors apparently think even less of Pioneerof the Nile (12-1), who won his third straight stakes race, the San Felipe, on Saturday at Santa Anita.

“I like what I saw, and this will tighten the screws for the Santa Anita Derby,” the colt’s trainer, Bob Baffert, said.

In the Santa Anita Derby on April 4, Pioneerof the Nile will meet The Pamplemousse, who is also on a three-race winning streak but was only 9-1 in the future pool.

Blame last year’s Derby winner, Big Brown, or the reigning horse of the year, Curlin, for the recent trend of giving great consideration to lightly raced horses. Dunkirk (7-1) has raced twice and won, but will be trying stakes company for the first time March 28 in the Florida Derby, where he will meet the Fountain of Youth winner Quality Road (14-1).

“I guess it looks like the public has the same opinion of the horse that we do,” the colt’s trainer, Todd Pletcher, said of Dunkirk, a son of Unbridled’s Song. “He’s been very impressive in his two starts, and he has the pedigree to go along with the ability that he has shown.”

The doubt hanging over this year’s crop of 3-year-olds has already proved a windfall for Robertson, Win Willy’s trainer. Last month, after another colt he trained, Hamazing Destiny, won his debut by more than 10 lengths, the Hall of Fame trainer D. Wayne Lukas came calling with an offer he could not refuse: $1.5 million for the son of Salt Lake.

“My owners decided to take the money, which is really what you’re supposed to do,” said Robertson, 35, whose father, Hugh, is a trainer on the Chicago circuit. “It’s hard to lose a colt that talented from your barn.”

Robertson entered Win Willy in the Rebel at the 11th hour after deducing that Silver City and Old Fashioned would probably set rapid fractions, setting up his colt’s closing kick. Win Willy had two victories in his three previous races, both sprints; his only loss came on the dirt.

“I knew he was improving every morning, and I figured he was going to like two turns,” Robertson said.

The colt was, after all, the son of the 2001 Derby winner, Monarchos. Still, he was bought for a bargain $25,000 on the final day of the Keeneland September Sale, which is where trainers like Robertson shop for clients like Myers, a retired sheet-metal manufacturer from Minneapolis, whose passion for racehorses runs deeper than their pockets.

After 25 years in the horse business, the $300,000 Rebel was easily Myers’s biggest victory in racing. No one would blame Myers or Robertson for accepting the $3 million offer, whose source was not known. One of the game’s golden rules is always take the money.

Myers’s wife loves gray horses, Robertson said, so now he is stuck with the colt.

Next, Win Willy will most likely take on Old Fashioned, and a whole bunch of other challengers, in the Arkansas Derby on April 11.

Myers and Robertson, apparently, believe that they have seen the next Kentucky Derby winner every day in their barn.

                      Drape's Derby List

Friesan Fire Larry Jones’s B colt is now his A colt after emphatic win in Louisiana Derby. The Blue Grass is next on April 11 at Keeneland.

Pioneerof the Nile Looks like the best in the West, but can he go from synthetics to dirt? Don’t think so.

Quality Road Very talented, lightly raced and in good hands with the trainer Jimmy Jerkens. Let’s watch the Florida Derby on March 28 at Gulfstream.

Old Fashioned Larry Jones baffled by loss in the Rebel to the 56-1 shot Win Willy. Needs to rebound in the Arkansas Derby. Too much, too soon?

The Pamplemousse Gets Pioneerof the Nile in the Santa Anita Derby on April 4.

Theregoesjojo Has won and lost against Quality Road. The rubber match is in the Florida Derby.

I Want Revenge The favorite in the Wood Memorial at Aqueduct on April 4.

Dunkirk The next Big Brown? He’s two for two and is the horse most are eager to see in the Florida Derby.

Win Willy Mac Robertson is a sharp young trainer, and this son of Monarchos looked like his dad in the stretch of the Rebel.

Terrain Got stuck in traffic in stretch of Louisiana Derby, but finished third after 99 days off.

Quality Road wins Florida Derby, becomes contender.

The first six furlongs were mere posturing. Once Quality Road and Dunkirk were side by side, that’s when the Florida Derby began.

That’s also when Quality Road announced himself as a serious Kentucky Derby contender.

Pulling away in the stretch, Quality Road held off previously unbeaten Dunkirk on Saturday to win the Grade 1 race at Gulfstream Park, giving the colt his second graded stakes win in as many starts.

Next up: The Run for the Roses, where Quality Road will surely be one of the top choices at Churchill Downs on May 2.

“It’s a lot of pressure,” said trainer Jimmy Jerkens, who’s taking a horse from his barn into racing’s most famed race for the first time. “But you know, it’s good to be in that position.”

Quality Road paid $4.40, $2.40 and $2.10, and finished in a track-record 1:47.72 over nine furlongs. Dunkirk, who needed a win to clinch a spot in the Kentucky Derby field, was second by nearly two lengths and paid $2.40 and $2.10. Theregoesjojo was third, paying $2.10.

The son of racing legend Alydar became a sensation during a brilliant career that included a win in the 1988 Breeders’ Cup Classic. He retired as horse racing’s all-time money winner with more than $6.6 million in earnings from 11 victories in 26 lifetime starts.

                                    Charitable Man arrives at Keeneland

Unbeaten Kentucky Derby (G1) hopeful CHARITABLE MAN (Lemon Drop Kid) arrived at Keeneland Monday night after shipping from his winter base at Palm Meadows in Florida, and the Kiaran McLaughlin-trained colt took a tour of Keeneland's main track on Tuesday morning, galloping 1 1/4 miles over the Polytrack under exercise rider Pat Correa. Unraced since his one-length victory in the Futurity S. (G2) in mid-September, Charitable Man will receive his lone prep for the Kentucky Derby (G1) in the Blue Grass S. (G1) on April 11.

"He had a saucer fracture of a shin," assistant trainer Neil McLaughlin explained of the lengthy layoff. "When was started back (this year), we knew everything would have to go perfect and so far everything has. He has not missed a day of training and every work we had planned he made every time."

Charitable Man returned to the worktab on February 13 and has recorded seven works at Palm Meadows, most recently drilling five furlongs in a bullet :59 4/5 last Saturday. It was the fastest of 42 at the distance.

"He will have one breeze (at Keeneland) before the Blue Grass, probably Sunday," McLaughlin said.

Regular rider Alan Garcia, who piloted Regal Ransom (Distorted Humor) to an upset in Saturday's U.A.E. Derby (UAE-G2), will retain the mount aboard Charitable Man in the Blue Grass.

Crucial prep races on tap for Kentucky Derby

The Kentucky Derby is only three weeks away. Since early January, 3-year-old colts have been testing themselves against their competition in preparation for this date. With thirty-nine prep races in the books and five to go, Saturday's two are crucial.

First up is the $750K Blue Grass Stakes (G1) run at 1 1/8 over the synthetic surface at Keeneland Race Course. Of the 11 entries, three are going to the Derby, regardless of Saturday's outcome. Terrain, third in the Florida Derby (G1) and Hold Me Back, winner of the Lane Ends Stake (G2), have enough graded-stakes earnings. Mafaaz, the British winner of the Kentucky Derby Challenge at Kempton, England, is invited because of that win; a special incentive to lure European runners to the Kentucky Derby.

Next is the million-dollar Arkansas Derby (G2), which is the richer of Saturday's two races. However, the 10-horse field is less than stellar. The clear standout is Old Fashioned, son of Unbridled Song and winner of the Remsen Stakes (G2) last year at Aqueduct. He followed that with a 3¼ length win on this Oaklawn surface in the Southwest Stakes (G3) in February, making him a Derby favorite. Yet twenty-six days later in the Rebel Stakes (G2), he was upset by a 56-1 long shot. Saturday he tries to vindicate himself with a win over nine horses, including the one who embarrassed him, Win Willy.

                                      Let's go, racing!

The Arkansas Derby is run at 1 1/8 mile over Oaklawn Park's dirt racetrack The track has been respecting speed for the last week; horses on or near the lead in the beginning are winning in large percentages. The weather is forecasted to be sunny, the track should remain the same. Old Fashioned, the favorite, and Papa Clem, who placed second in the Louisiana Derby (G2) should be on the early lead. Old Fashioned will win that duel and the race. Since his price will likely be short, exotics are the only way to be rewarded for the risk. Look for either Papa Clem or Flying Private to complete the exacta. If you want to go deeper, use Danger to Society, who was scratched from the Florida Derby (G1) to run Saturday.

Keeneland Race Course has been favoring horses who mildly come off the pace. With the weather continuing to be warm and dry, nothing less should be expected. In the Blue Grass Stakes (G1), there are two speed horses, Join in the Dance and Charitable Man. They will have the lead out of the gate. Massone, General Quarters and Patena will be in strategic pursuit, assuring an honest pace. The rest of the field will be positioned to take advantage of the tiring front-runners and on the come-from-behind favoring track.

Theregoesjojo should improve from his horrible trip in the Florida Derby (G1) where he clipped heels in the stretch with Quality Road, the eventual winner. He has the talent to win; however, his lack of synthetic-racing experience makes him a risk to support. Terrain, with solid experience on synthetic surfaces and an excellent return race after more than a three-month lay-off in the Louisiana Derby (G2), will be coming after the leaders in the stretch.

With a 1/16 of mile to go, look for General Quarters to overcome Join in the Dance to take the lead with Terrain, Hold Me Back and Theregoesjojo closing in. Mafaaz could be there as well. But his lack of experience against this level of competition makes him suspect.

Terrain should nip General Quarters at the finish. Theregoesjojo, Hold Me Back and the speedster Join in the Dance will likely be in the picture.

With morning-line odds of 6-1, a win-and-place bet on Terrain makes sense. For the more daring, consider a trifecta key with Terrain on top of Theregoesjojo, Hold Me Back, General Quarters and Join in the Dance. If you play the trifecta, double your place bet as a hedge in case Terrain finishes second.

Good luck, and keep the day job.

I was at the Wood Memorial. I Want Revenge looked really good and well ridden. Beat a bad start and was steered well through traffic.

I would play some bucks on Musket Man at those odds, +2850. What book has these odds? I played $100 on him at +2000 last week. Bookmaker has him at +800.

Gomez will ride Pioneerof the Nile in the Derby

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) — Jockey Garrett Gomez is placing his Kentucky Derby bet on Pioneerof the Nile.

Gomez said Sunday he'll ride trainer Bob Baffert's 3-year-old star in the May 2 Derby, a decision his agent Ron Anderson said was a "ridiculously tough call."

Gomez chose Pioneerof the Nile over Dunkirk, citing his four-race winning streak with the colt that included a victory in the Santa Anita Derby.

Pioneerof the Nile, son of 2003 Belmont Stakes winner Empire Maker, is considered one of the early Derby favorites. The Derby will be Pioneerof the Nile's first start on a dirt surface.

Dunkirk finished second to Quality Road in the Florida Derby with Gomez aboard on March 28.

Gomez is winless in five Derby starts.
