squats are the king of lifting exercises.. stimulate the whole body, and they are aerobic if you do them with 60 or less seconds of rest... I did them to get my vert up as a youngster, and then got into them for football obviously. then started doing powerlifting. If you do them right, you shouldn't have any probs with them..... I don't have to use wraps or a belt so after doing them half my life, i'm fine..
seriously i've even done jump squats with over 135 before... no probs.
bench can be killer for some people's shoulders and elbows...and it is soooo over emphasized you get kids doing way more then they should and hurt themselves, arching their backs ect.
a few people die every year from benching.... and a spotter doesn't assure you of being safe.. especially if you use heavy weights... more people tear muscles from benching then any exercise..
i had sworn off benching, but I wanted to compete in a all 3 lifts competition in the fall, so I started benching again last fall... sure enough I suffered a slight tear to my pec/delt insertion... still fuked up from it
