1) Black History Month originated in 1926 by Carter Godwin Woodson as Negro History Week. The month of February was chosen in honor of Frederick Douglass and Abraham Lincoln, who were both born in that month.

I wonder if there is any way a thread like this could go wrong. I suppose not. Racists are usually out in the streets courageously standing up for their beliefs, not hiding behind computers.

3) Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. (1929 – 1968) was stabbed by an African–American woman in 1958 while attending his book signing at Blumstein’s department store in Harlem. The next year Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and his wife Coretta Scott King visited India to study Ghandi’s nonviolence philosophy.

I really hope the idiots keep their comments to themselves on this one...it really would be in poor taste, not that it has stopped people in the past.

4) Pumpsie Green was the first black to play for the Boston Red Sox, the last MLB team to have a black player in uniform. His brother was Cornell Green, one of my favorite players ever for the Dallas Cowboys, a team I love to hate.

10) Aaron Pointer
On Sep 27, 1963, Aaron Pointer became part of MLB history as part of an all rookie lineup the Houston Colt .45s (now Astros) fielded against the visiting New York Mets. It is the only time in baseball history a team has started an all rookie lineup. Pointer, who five days earlier made his MLB debut as a pinch runner, played RF and batted fifth in the order, and singled in the fourth inning for his only hit of the game. The rest of the lineup included four other blacks -- Brock Davis in left, Jimmy Wynn in center, Sonny Jackson at shortstop and Joe Morgan at second. The remaining rookies were Glenn Vaughan at third, Rusty Staub at first, Jerry Grote catching and Jay Dahl on the mound. In all, Houston used 15 rookies in that game.
But wait, there's more.
Pointer's MLB career was short-lived as he would play in just 38 more MLB games between then and 1967, all with Houston.
After his MLB career, Pointer became the first black referee in Pac 10 football action in 1978, eventually becoming a head linesman. In 1987 he joined the NFL as an official and retired as a head linesman in 2003. He still works for the NFL as a 'game-day observer.'
But wait, there's more.
Included in his large family were siblings Fritz, Anita, Ruth, Issa, Bonnie and June. You might know Anita, Ruth, Issa, Bonnie and June as The Pointer Sisters, a 1970s-80s Grammy winning R&B group.

A Texas-Canada connection for the thread...
11) John Ware
John Ware's saddle, spurs and gun can be seen at Alberta's Dinosaur Park, remembering one of the best cowboys of the late 1800s. Born in Fort Worth, Texas, he helped establish the Bar U Ranch in the Northwest Territories, and his prowess at roping and trailbreaking earned him a spot as a great cowboy.
