I can't tell if anybody even read the article ganchrow linked. Everyone here keeps rehashing all the same old stuff that always goes around.

The ideas are really different and interesting and original. And great - they would work great.

In fact they're so good I can't, in my wildest imagination, imagine them ever being used.

      NO COIN FLIP

At the start of OT, continue the game from the current spot. Same team with the ball, same down & distance, etc. Put 15 minutes on the clock, sudden death. Everyone can quit whining about the stupid ass coin flip. Keep the action going as if starting a new quarter.

This will have strategy implications. I imagine some teams will be content to sit on the ball with the score tied and play for field position in OT, rather than run a frantic two minute drill. The is the beauty. That is football. It's about ball control. Albeit, this only applies with the specific situation of the score being tied. Most other games will still feature the two minute offense with teams trying to catch up or go ahead in a non-tie game.

why can they do it like hockey. play 10 men for 5 min. then 9 men. then 8 men. then 7 men. at the end you see two vs two.

The nerd in me likes the auction idea, except that auctions have nothing to do with football. I don't think auctions would appeal to the average beer drinking slob of a football fan.

I still like my idea best. Football is all about guts and simplicity, not about coin flips, auctions or even sudden death. It's more like a cage match where the last man standing wins, there's no way out except in a body bag. Obviously they've gotta have time limits and whatnot or it could go on forever. I'd still rather leave the game feeling that the winning team earned it with a knockout rather than by winning a coin flip or auction.

What do you mean? The only thing different from the currrent format is that each team is guaranteed one possession. What's wrong with that?

FWIW, googling "Real Madrid" returns 36,100,000 hits while "Houston Texans" returns 3,400,000. This seems right.

Let the team that wins the coin toss start from their own 1 yard line. Then teams have a REALLY big incentive not to go for the tie.
