In Metallica's documentary "Some kind of monster" Metallica was comparing themselves to U2. They're both rock bands and they've achieved something beyond superstar status. These two bands are about equally popular and I don't think anyone else can touch them.

In a word, they're both rock bands. Metallica's Load albums have plenty of songs that are U2-esque and U2 has some songs that are as heavy as Metallica's heavy music.

Good point. U2 and Metallica have both had success for about an equally long period.

As worthless as they are now Metallica had some really strong innovative stuff in the 80's. Nothing U2 did compares with Metallica's 1st 4 albums.

Remember Flotsam and Jetsam, Newsted's first band?....Had a real high pitched shrieker for a lead singer... more like Black Metal bands from Scandinavia than anything else....Hard to listen to that guy but the instrumentals rocked...

I couldn't agree more, sadly all these album were produced in the 1980s, next year is 2010 so its been a long while since Metallica's best stuff as well.
