#143must have posted the wrong link on the last one as the one I was posting was from dec 2012. I'll find it on my laptop later.Originally posted by Mac4LyfeWow - you had to go way back to 2002 for that last link...
The other 2 links are very minor. There's more killings in the US in one weekend than those knife incidents that took place all year.
You're proving the point that getting rid of all our guns might be a good thing.
the other two are relevant in that knife crime is a very real problem in Oz and UK. Most violent crimes in those countries are committed with knives. Should we ban them too? Point is, criminals are going to get their hands on something to commit crimes. You can kill multiple people with knives (see crazy people in china killing kids) and you can make a bomb from shit you buy at Bed Bath and Beyond. Should we ban pressure cookers? It's not ever going to stop no matter what laws you enact.
These kids wouldn't have been stopped with a ban on guns.Comment -

#145Mechanism of injury is very important. One has a much greater chance of surviving a stab wound than a gun shot wound.Originally posted by gauchojakethe other two are relevant in that knife crime is a very real problem in Oz and UK. It is very rare to be able to kill 'multiple people' with a knife.
Police and other authorities monitor chemical purchases that can be used in bomb making.
I do agree with you on the pressure cookers though. Absolute killing machines. Hardly a day passes without another being set off, maiming and killing everything in its wake.

#147I'm Australian.
Some of my best childhood memories are hunting kangaroos and wild pigs with my grandfather. It was normal for kids to have air rifles and 22s and be allowed to go wandering around alone shooting rabbits or targets. And doing that was some of the best fun I had as a kid too. Sounds all kind of irresponsible by todays terms, but point is guns were as acceptable and widespread in Australia as in America less than 40 years ago.
So Aussies of my age can see with our own eyes that the change can be made over time..Comment -

****** up statement, but pretty funny.
Obama looked like a moron in regards to that trial. Why would he even fukkin respond to the bullshit story? Talk about all the other injustices that take place in this country instead of addressing some situation that, while fukked, is not all that outrageous given all the other crazy shit that takes place in this country.
The hypocrisy in the media is truly amazing.Comment -

#151I'm not really for or against the banning of guns. I don't have any guns so nobody can fukkin take one from me. But I will say there is an argument to be made that if the government comes to take you away for whatever reason having a gun (or firearms of some sort) is justifiable. It is my understanding that is why guns were legal in the first place. To protect oneself from the government.
Also, "the more things outlawed the more outlaws run." So while there is already a huge contingent of people buying or somehow getting illegal guns, if you outlaw them the case could be made that the illegal gun makers/sellers will make even more money (and in general, that is probably not a good thing, ala the drug trade)Comment -

#152Fair point. That being said, I don't think it is to do with the constitution (although it is a convenient argument for gun nuts based in another time) and I don't know if you necessarily have a majority. I think pro gun groups have a far too much political power.Originally posted by gauchojakeSerious question- Did the Australian Constitution guarantee your right to bear arms? Ultimately, I think a lot of Americans think it won't work, so why bother trying. The thinking is that the under belly will always have access to guns, so why not have them too. It doesn't really make for a healthy society. If not a ban on most guns, then significantly more regulation nation-wide would be a good start.Comment -

#154American Constitution=serious business. It's the basis for most gun advocates arguments and politically unpopular to try and change. The gun lobby is absolutely too strong, but the same could be said about most special interests.Originally posted by GeeFair point. Nationwide regulation would be a start. Currently each state makes there own laws. I can buy an assault rifle in CA, but it has a different clip and ten rounds max. However I could drive 4.5 hours and buy a fully automatic weapon in Nevada. It's pretty stupid.Comment -

#155you are a moron...i want to keep my guns because i enjoy the outdoors and hunting, also targets shooting...not because i want to be able to shoot peoples brains out...you are saying everyone that wants to keep guns legal is ok with people killing each other and that is moronic at best...all of you euros never go hunting? never go camping where there are bears and all kinds of animals that could harm you? If the US gov is ok with black people(and others) running around killing each other, the least they could do is let white folks keep their guns to make it a fair fight...funny how all of these foreigners have it all figured out for the US, maybe yall can move here and become president, it worked for obama so yall might have a shot...Originally posted by SportsMushroomits working just fine in europe, and we have far more civil liberties than us citizens have

#172Between October 1996 and September 1997, the government bought more than 631,000 guns from its residents – mostly 22-caliber semi-automatics and shotguns. The government spent $360m in Australian dollars. Only an estimated 60% of Australian residents obeyed the law.
However, crime statistics in Australia reveal that increased gun control has made no impact on violent crime and homicides in the country since 1996, nor did the gun buy-back program show any positive effect on Australia’s crime rate. Australia’s crime rate has always been lower than that of the United States, but no observable statistic links Australia’s crime rate, relative to the United States’, to gun control. Their own data fails to provide that connection.
According to the Australian Institute of Criminology, the “percentage of homicides committed with a firearm continued a declining trend which began in 1969“, which was well before the strict new controls on gun ownership in 1996.
Data does indicate that the number of homicides committed with a gun declined since the middle 90s. However, homicides committed with knife or other sharp objects increased dramatically, more quickly than the decline rate of gun crime. In other words, nothing changed in Australia’s violent crime statistics beyond the weapon of choice.Comment -
