Canadian prison system is soft compared to the US system.
Not that you can't be killed or have bad things happen to you, but in general it's just not as dangerous as a big US Penitentiary.
In a Canadian penitentiary as long as you mind your own business and don't get into debt from drugs/gambling you'll be fine.
A US prison, would be much more difficult. Don't want to try either.Comment -

US is so much different, in Canada if your offense is not of a violent or sexual nature you will get day parole after 1/6th of your sentence, meaning a 4 year sentence is really only 8 months locked up, then you get transferred to a halfway house where you can get a job and have a curfew. At 1/3 of sentence completion you get full parole. If you weren't eligible for parole at 1/3 you will be released at 2/3s on "statutory release".
With all these possibilities, prisoners here are less desperate and have much more hope, plus sentences are usually much less than in the USA for the same crime.
This makes for a better behaved inmate.
Prisoners here also get quite a bit of perks compared to most US pens, conjugal visits are allowed every 8 weeks or so for married guys, you can have a computer (no internet) and TV in your cell, non violent offenders quickly get transferred from maximum security to "camps" with no fences.
The differences between the two countries prisons is enormous, and Canada / USA have transfer agreements that allow citizens to apply be returned to their home country to finish the sentence, most Americans in jail here tend not to want to go to a US prison and instead finish doing their time in Canada.Comment -

I am really hoping that I do not have the opportunity to find out how I would do in prison. My bro did time when he was in his early 20's at a minimum security facility and he made it fine back then. 17+ years ago. I know a few guys who have been in prison and all of them made it ok and came back home.Comment -
