OT - I don't know how to dress myself
I live most of my life in plaid pajama-type pants with some old, comfy shirt from my old-comfy-shirt-pile. That is my work uniform.

When I go out, it is jeans. I have some respectable clothes in my closet from an office job I had in the 90's but it has been a while since I have trotted those out. I couldn't even guess if the pants are in style and whatnot.

I don't own a suit. My sister is getting married in February so I guess I'll have to deal with that at some point, however here is my question of the moment:

I have a date next Friday to see a stage production of The Sound of Music. (Please contain your jealousy). This is in Toronto at the Princess of Wales Theatre.

Naturally, the first thing I think of when I have a question about fashion is SBR. Any advice? Any of the Toronto crowd know where that place ranks on the swankiness scale? I know I went there with the ex a few times but she always told me what to wear for stuff like that and I don't remember. I'm thinking it is not an occasion for jeans.

I would suggest a pair of khakis with either a dress shirt or sweater.

you'll see people wear anything and everything at the Mirvish theatres. You definitely don't need to wear a suit, but you will probably see some people with them. You'll probably see people wearing jeans as well. But I agree with Nina's suggestion.

Watch jjgold's vids. I have never seen anyone look so sharply dressed with a 50c white tee shirt.

Okay I think I am getting the idea. I don't think a shopping spree is necessary.

If I basically wear what I would wear at that former office job, it should be okay. Non-jeans type of pants (don't know if they are classified as khaki but they seem respectable enough.) A button-down shirt with a sweater over the top and the collar sticking out. (I'm remembering all the tricks now.) My sweaters are pretty regular looking sweaters with unobnoxious patterns on them. My ex bought them so they must be basically okay.

I think this will be alright. I had a look at the stuff in my closet and I think I can put together a basic Jesper Parnevic look.

Mudcat, why not stop into a Church & Wellesley Village "cafe" and chat it up with some of the fellas, go ahead, ask them for some fashion advice, those guys seem to know how to dress.

What Nina suggested. Theatre productions don't require a suit but business casual dress. Khakis, a solid shirt (tucked in) with a vneck sweater or blazer if it is cold. I like the mens warehouse suggestion but don't go if you cant say "no," those guys clearly work on commission and they are aggressive to say the least.

Great place, friendly people. I was hammered out of my face and needed to piss, cop across the road, they were closed and still let me use the washroom

I thought it made sense to listen to me since I am a woman and can tell you what we like. But that is just my thoughts on the matter...

I agree Nina, a womans opinion on mens fashion is extremely useful, that is why I recommended he talk to a gay man personally.

No, my pants say Midtown. I checked a couple other samples of my work pants and there is another Midtown and also Denver Hayes.

                                                        So maybe that clarifies things.

It depends on what kind of girl you're taking out, how long you have known her, and if you're trying to impress her. It's a subtle thing. It's not about the clothes, but about the little lift you get in how you feel about yourself. Women pick up on that. And most guys act a little more respectful and thoughtful when they dress sharp; so the woman will look upon him a little differently.

Edit. Just remembered. Years ago my younger brother couldn't get a woman for the life of him. He'd never have a girlfriend. He's a good guy but always looked messy. So my wife and I suggested he get a completely new wardrobe. He was desperate, so he did. He changed nothing else. Within a month he surprised everyone. Suddenly he walked around with a beautiful girl by his side. A changed man.

How old are you, Mudcat? Personally, I hate khakis. They are definitely not in style. If I were you, I would get a new pair of dark jeans, a button down shirt, a sportcoat, and a pair of dress shoes (all color coordinated). Ask a girl at the store for advice if you're unsure. I'd probably go to a place like Nieman Marcus or Macy's. You should be able to find everything you need there. My two cents...

                                                              i was being silly.

I used to rock about 5-6 pairs of Skidz, and 2-3 were plaid , most people made fun of them, especially this one chick i dated my Jr. year, she hated them. I loved them cause they were basically pajama pants but were marketed as regular pants. I love my clothes loose fitting.

Z-Cavaricci's were considered more dress-up pants, i only had 1 pair cause they were like 100 bucks. Think ** Hammer type pants.

But I'm probably not going to go on a shopping spree for this evening. Also relating to what Dark Horse was saying, my date knows me fairly well. She seems to like me for the informal weirdo I am. I have also had a few chuckles with her over this topic. Her only request was something without holes and clean.

She just laughs at me. Every other time we have gotten together, it has been jeans.
