Its a made up term that people use to make themselves feel smarter than they really are, and to justify the play they are making. Since they believe that they are very smart, then if you are making the opposite play as them, then you are making a square play. Another type of play people like to pretend are square plays, is if one side had over 60% of the action, then that's the square play.

The term "square play" is used because the public usually lose. Consider a square play as the public consensus for most of the games. Most of the time they are on the wrong side of a game which is why they lose in the long run.
