#5No such thing as a square or sharp bet...But the kids like to call Pats and Jets - pts yesterday as square bets because alot of people thought it was a no brainer (and both lost)...People playing Lions and Browns + pts were sharps (won) but I call them lucky and ballsy...The best play for those 2 games was no plays imo..

#6I think it's more like the opposite of the sharp play. Square plays are the bad plays that take into account only the most obvious information and really don't include any real insight.
Many on here would say it's basically just what ESPN would have you believe on any given day.Comment -

See people don't see it but the bad teams of last year have improved alot. (Lions, Browns, Rams and Bucs) Teams aren't going to walk all over them anymore. Doesn't mean they will cover every week but in good spots they will. Browns were at home playing very good D against maybe the most overrated team in the league. It went exactly as I thought it would.Comment -

#11one that is so "obvious" that any dink off the streets would think the same way. there is a belief that the integrity of sports is not all on the up-and-up. so there are non-obvious determining factors as well as funny-business that can help "vegas" make money off a lot of suckers who trust that games should go as they should. when you bet like that- you are more susceptible to a fix. and you forget to account for some other things also.Originally posted by supergo523i know this is a dumb question, but could someone please tell me what is a Square play and why is it called so? Thanks.
theres a saying that "vegas is not stupid" when you see such a gift line, historically, there is a reason for it...and it is often bad news even though it looks so obviously like the pick.Comment -

#12No such thing as a square. Their plays hit and miss just as much as the "sharp" ones. Sharps lose for overanalyzing everything. Play what you like and ignore the rest.Comment -

Like I said you have alot to learn. Cuz if you have been watching the NFL this year you would not say the Browns and Lions are shit teams. Lions have been in ever game this year. They are 7-1 against the spread. But you wouldn't want to put your money on shit teams.

#21I don't believe in sharp or square plays either. or if they exist, the labeling is irrelevant anyway. sure it feels good to be on a winning side that no one else is on, it makes you feel superior to everyone and that ur in the top 10%, but it's still just 1 win. the next game, the 'square play' will just easily win and so on.
dumbasses who just say in a retarded voice 'duuuuuuhhh, uhhhh, team A will win because they are better', will still win the same amount of money as the guy who thinks he's smarter than everyone and finds obscure information to justify taking the dogsComment -

#22'Square plays' are the obvious picks based on superficial information disregardful of more detailed analysis.
Take for instance the Pats/Cleveland game (sorry to pick old wounds); but superficially any one looking at that would say --
'wow Pats are 6-1 and a championship 'rep', and Cleveland is 2-5 and has been lousy the last few years. and i can get the Pats only -4, sign me up!'
Looking further though the Pats have played all close games (except the fluky miami game, 3 special team TDs is fluky); and the Browns have been in all close game despite playing a very tough schedule. It isnt to say anyone would have thought the Browns would win by 20 points, but no one should be shocked they covered.
This isn't to say that 'square' plays are losers, they win just fine. And many times the 'square' play is the right playComment -

#23Its like taking the team that should win, the obvious pick without doing any research. I workout at a lottery store and I see many young guys walk in and put down $40 dollars on all the favourites (Canadian "ou") in a 4 team parlay. If you are just getting started then i would recommend you never make picks on just any game. Pick your spots, Vegas isn't perfect. They do make mistakes

I just said that cuz I really believe there is a sharp and square side more so in football than any other sport. Doesn't mean the sharp side always wins. Good luck the rest of the way......

Squares = NE, NYJ, NO, Colts, etc.
Next week :

#33You have to differentiate a square play and a square play that turned sharp.
Like tonight with the Steelers. Sharps pounded the Steelers early and moved the line, squares took the shitty line after.Comment -
