The Cougar basketball team will head out on a two-week road trip, stopping first at Santa Clara University to take on the Broncos today at 7pm.
The Cougs will then head to Hawaii for the Diamond Head Classic, and then to LA for the Pac-10 opening series against UCLA and USC. They will be back just in time for the new year.
Santa Clara was picked 4th in the WCC preseason media poll and has been expected to contend for the conference title (Portland, a team that the Cougs handled pretty well in Seattle last month, was picked 5th in that same poll). Still, despite a 6-5 record and some big losses against other Pac-10 teams (to USC by 13 and Arizona by 23), the Broncos have some talent and could sneak up on the Cougs if they make the mistake of looking past them and to the fun and challenge of their Hawaii trip.
This has the makings of one those classic trap games - they've been off for nine days, they are on the road against a solid team and they've got much bigger games ahead. Not that I'm worried. I'm certain Ken Bone will have the Cougs ready to go tonight and the great thing about this team is the number of weapons they have. If any of them are taking a while to shake off the rust, the others can pick up the slack.
Sophomore guard Kevin Foster is averaging 17.9 points per game and 6-9, 235 pound junior forward Marc Trasolini is averaging 11.7 points and 6.4 rebounds per game.
All-time, the Cougs have only faced Santa Clara twice, beating them both times. The last meeting between the two schools was 1973.
