    EP36's MARCH to MADNESS
Tracking my picks here all season long. Busting my cherry in preparation for tomorrow's marathon. I don't claim to know my elbow from my a-hole, but college hoops is my favorite. Add anything you want. Ridicule the picks. Praise the picks. Whatev. Time to get my march on and let the madness ensue for the bookies or my wallet, we shall see.

    11.14.10: INDIANA-WRIGHT STATE UNDER 134.5 [-110]
Indiana gets Wright State at home. Wright State is traditionally a grind it out type of squad and their new coach is a former assistant who shouldn't change much of that. IU coach Tom Crean said he specifically chose Wright State because they remind him of a physical Big Ten squad. If that's the case, this could be a bit of a defensive battle. Wright State will need to limit the Hoosiers three point looks after IU made 50% in their opener.

      11.15.10: WAKE FOREST-HAMPTON OVER 137 [-110]
Wake had little issue scoring in their opener as they put up 79 points, but they could not stop Stetson as the Hatters nailed them for 89. That's a Stetson squad replacing several starters from last season and picked by most to finish in the bottom third of the Atlantic Sun. Granted, Wake is expected to finish low in the ACC, but they have some young talent for first year coach Jeff Bzdelik. Freshman JT Terrell scored 26 in the opener and may already be looked at as a go-to type as a result. Would expect Wake to play some better defense, but that Stetson put up such a big number should give Hampton some hope. Wake also needs to wallop some of these lower tier conference teams to gain some sort of confidence because ACC play is probably going to be very rough for them.

Pathetic shooting. Oh well, that's why we tread lightly early. Might have one more play for later tonight and then hittin' it all day tomorrow with the marathon.

            11.15.10: WINTHROP +14 [-110]
Interesting clash here. Winthrop lost some big inside guns to graduation. VCU has four starters back, but lost their inside punch in Larry Sanders. VCU would prefer to keep the tempo speedier whereas I think Winthrop's best chance is a half court grinder where they rely on their defense. If Winthrop defends the perimeter and can make some shots, I think they can keep this within the number. They also must rebound well. Gonna try it.

              11.15.10: UCLA-PEPPERDINE UNDER 147 [-110]
Teaching time for Ben Howland here early as Pepperdine likes the up tempo game, but UCLA should be looking to figure out how to defend better this season after last year's very ordinary campaign. There's quite a few of the same names in this game that played last year when UCLA held down Pepperdine 71-52. If UCLA can keep Pepperdine G Keion Bell in-check, then this could be another blowout and finish slightly under this number.

This is just a gut play. Memphis shot the daylights out of the three ball in their opener. Miami has some solid returnees. Hopefully we go up & down the court.

                              11.16.10: NORTHEASTERN +5 [+105]
Northeastern faces Southern Illinois with both teams having one game in the books. Northeastern fought off intra-city rival Boston, 66-64 while SIU was pasted by Illinois 84-63. The Salukis were a poor MVC team last year and lost some key players. Northeastern lost perhaps their school's best player since Reggie Lewis when Matt Janning graduated. They however, have a player capable of carrying the load in PG Chiasson Allen. Both defenses need to improve from their openers. Like Northeastern here as their half court pace should provide a good test to SIU that just played an up tempo Illinois squad. Key could be 3 pt. defense. SIU did not defend the line well, Northeastern did.

Allen is a no-show at this point. 3 fouls, zero points. No way Northeastern stays close if he doesn't wake up at the half or the rest of the team for that matter. They are shooting horribly and defending poorly. Hopefully I can find a groove as the day moves on. Gonna pound the action today.

Dang. 60-60. Allen came up big in the last two minutes, but missed a FT that would have put them up with a couple seconds left. OT seems to always bone me in basketball.

                                              11.16.10: BAYLOR -15 [-115]
Laying some chalk here, but there are reasons to believe Baylor sans LaceDarius Dunn can still put a hurtin' on LaSalle today. The Bears crushed Grambling State in their opener, 87-52 and considering their poor FT shooting [missed 17], they could have won by 40+. LaSalle meanwhile had their hands full with Columbia until part of the way through the second half. They wound up shooting almost 57% for the game to fuel their comeback. Expect Baylor's zone defense to help negate Guillandeaux who had a huge opening game and it should allow Baylor's bigs to combat LaSalle's Aaric Murray who is a stud. LaSalle got beat on the boards though by an Ivy League squad, so going against Baylor that was +17 on the glass is going to be tough.

3 point shooting wasn't factored in for me. Baylor didn't take that many in their first game and I didn't expect a ton today. Turnovers are killing them today. If they'd cut down there, they'd be up double digits easy.

This is going to be close I think, but I like that both teams put up 70 or more in their openers despite not being at their best. The Hokies shot just 42%, but canned 21/31 FTs to net their 70. They should feel good about James Madison having shot 48% against K-State, so you could expect them to put up some points. K-State scored 75 with a lot of damage from distance [10]19] and just 42% shooting overall. They got to the FT line, but must shoot better with just 17 of 32 made. Pullen & Russell have to carry the load with or without Kelly. Delaney should want to put on a show getting to play against quality competition on national TV. I think FTs help this sneak into the mid 140s.

Buffs are a solid pick tonight to keep within the number against Georgia and could even sneak out the straight up win or so I think. Georgia will be without one of their top players tonight as Howard Trey-Thompkins works through an ankle sprain. Without him in their opener, the Dawgs barely beat Mississippi Valley State, 72-70 in spite of shooting 49% from the field. Colorado's defense needs major improvements, allowing 55% to Idaho State in winning 88-80. Buffs have solid skill players though with three returning starts who combined for 48 points in their opener. If Colorado competes tonight, Higgins & Burks in their backcourt figure to play a major role.

If the first 8 minutes are any indication, the OVER is fukked. K-State really needs a FT shooting coach or something. They're going to shoot FTs forever and a day this half and probably won't make but five of them.

Seriously though, 'Nova held a Bucknell squad that is expected to contend in the Patriot League to just 18 points. So the question is can a Marist team that won a single game last season and is again favored to rest at the bottom of its conference ... score at all? Tongue in cheek, yes, but in all seriousness Marist shouldn't score better than 20. Villanova was a little rusty I think with just 28 first half points against Bucknell. They will likely explode here, but if Marist can keep them around 40 then the under has a shot. Gotta keep poundin' on Marathon day.
