I didn't think they were particularly impressive, but they handled WVU, who controlled UK fairly easily, and UK looked like the "dominant" team to win it after Kansas.





The insanity of conspiracy theorists/haters knows no bounds. Duke's closest margin of victory was 7 for the first 4 rounds, but no, they OBVIOUSLY won because of the refs. And then they were "on their own" in the FF, oh of course. And when they were, they beat WVU by 20 points...

Cal - outplayed cleanly for 40mins
Purdue - tight first half, outplayed last 10 mins
Baylor - outplayed final 10 mins, gave up too many O rbs
WVU - rolled
Butler - close, but seemed like Duke was never in any serious danger of losing

And that's no cake walk, it's probably as tough as you can get, except Butler.

hes not a moron they were not that good. their record was inflated by favoring refs all season. and the NCAA did what they could to get them to the final 4 as well. they needed at least one prestigious program in it............but once in the final 4 they were on their own and you could see in the final game without the refs help they needed a lot of luck to beat butler. if howard hits some of those shots after constantly getting by zoubek Butler wins it by a good margin. this was the perfect road for coach K to take to get a championship, very fortunate

Absolutely insanely idiotic thread.. If you really knew anything, you would inderstand that despite a high ranking, they were one of the most underrated teams this year, since everyone felt they didn't even deserve a #1 seed, etc. Take a glance at the Offensive and Defensive efficiency ratings and try and find one team other than Kansas who even comes remotely CLOSE to Duke on both ends of the floor.. No one.

Duke was ranked #1 in the country on the Pomeroy Ratings for much of the season, they were even ranked #1 while Kansas was #1 in the polls. Sounds like a legit team to me.

at the end of the day the score board doesn't lie. they're the champs and that's all the matter. refs were kind to butler all tournament long so you can also make the case for them being a weak runner up.

The best game of the season was Georgetown owning duke with President Obama courtside. Sorry just had to say it but on Duke players success in the NBA, i think Singler and Scheyer are the only players with any future in the Association.

i agree, but don't forget kansas 88 (6 seed) and arizona 97 (5 seed i think) as two less-than-great teams who just got caught fire at the right time. at least duke played at a high level from start to finish of the basketball season and earned the #1 seed.

At the end of the season, I had them rated a smidgen better than anyone else, and enjoyed the 10.5-1 Matchbook payday when they won.

If you think the best team in the best conference (top to bottom, which is what counts; and it isn't just me, Pomeroy also had the ACC top rated) winning doesn't deserve it, then, good, keep feeding my Matchbook account.

As to the comments about Duke having some huge HCA, that's soooo wrong I'm almost speechless. They have more or less the same HCA as everyone else. Stop babbling nonsense and start doing some stats work on it.

And finally, about them being lucky: every team that wins the Madness got lucky. Even if they're better than everyone else, if nothing else a team would have to be lucky not to have any off days.
