I think the majority of us lose all our money when we're too wrapped up in trying to win the big one. I do wish i had the funds to lay $50,000 on a game or two and call it a season. But I'm nowhere near there yet. I have the parameters that i try to stay within, or at least that i'm trying to stay within. Its when things start to go south that those parameters get tested. Good luck to you man.

The Clippers covered..in OT no less. The weekend is now officially gone. Tomorrow starts a new betting week. Thus far the account sits at $544.56, need to get to that $1300 mark to pay the bills. Its only March 4th, but i do know how bad things can get. I just read on one of the forums about the guy betting heavy favorites to turn 100 into 1,000..he hit 9 bets in a row, was gonna pay out when that 10th bet hit today..and they lose by 7. Just fkin crazy. Mad props for getting 9 in a row, even if its heavy favorites..still hard to do. But i saw that and just thought more about money management. If you guys have any tips on that particular subject, feel free to dish them out. I havent looked at anything for tomorrow yet. Had a busy day. I may take the day off tomorrow. Best of luck to those of you who are trying to end there day on a positive note.

I looked a bit at the lines last night and didnt really see anything i liked. But now its the day of and i ended up placing a bet. It just feels like one of those bets that i placed because i wanted action, not because i actually liked what i capped. I will learn to stay away from those type of bets. But i may have to pay for this lesson...bet Utah ML..$104.56 to win $80.43.

Chemo- skimmed your thread and I'll add my two cents.

You might have disclosed this, but what's your approx. age? Do you have a degree? If so, are you working in that field?

I would urge you to strictly do straight bets. Parlays and teasers are for entertainment value. You'll win here and there, but I've never known a person that can win long term betting parlays. Pros laugh at teasers and tell you they always look good on paper.

Before you quit your day job, order a book called THE ODDS by Chad Millman. Paperback is around $10 and worth a read. As you might have guessed, most these guys are degens, but the stories are interesting. The three people in the book tried "going pro". Didn't end well, never does.

I lived in Vegas for over 10 years. I could tell you some crazy stories. Moved there in the late 80"s. I was in finance and did very well. I sold my prior house and had a large chunk of change in the bank. I rented and signed a One year lease, to deceide where I wanted to live. Realized real quick that if I kept betting, I'd lose my equity. There was money to be made in Vegas and it wasn't by pulling slot handles or betting games. Vegas is hurting now, but I doubt things have changed much. You wanted to be on the houses side then, as now. I worked for a large finance firm and specialized in Gaming equities and bonds. Vegas was booming then and the smart guys were investing in equities and the suckers filled the tills. Most people came for the week or weekend and only played what they could afford to lose, which is fine. I Invested heavily in IGT (slots), Mirage and MGM when it was an empty lot and a dream. Was in Riverboats when gaming was spreading outside of Vegas. Made a ton of money. Thank god I kept gambling to a weekend pursuit, to just wind down after a hard week. I'd hate to think where I would be if I chose a different path.

I would urge you to focus your energy at your job. Keep gaming as recreation. If you think your job is a dead end and you have limited options, I would focus my energies more towards finance. If you have to have "action" and are good at math, consider learning more about equities. Tons of options available to minimize risk and the knowledge you gain (finance) will always be useful. If you have an interest , look into The Complete Turtle trader, by M. Covel. He also has a great book called Trend Following. If you have a good head on your shoulder and can work hard, consider starting a small biz. Good luck with your choices.

Thank goodness Utah covered; wasnt super thrilled when i placed the bet. Even though they won, i see a lesson in it. I didnt feel GREAT about any of the games today while trying to handicap. And one of the big things i want to avoid is betting when i dont have to...whether its just because i want action or whatever. I'm trying to treat it as a business...slow growth, and no crazy risks..at least not at the moment. I will definitely take the win, not gonna be unhappy about that. At the moment the account sits at $624.99 for the month...the goal is still a ways away..$1,304. I will be trying to keep my money management in check....appreciate the reminder Lovin Life. I will be looking at some of the games for tomorrow in a bit, seeing if anything jumps out.

I definitely just made an overreaction play..i placed a 3 team parlay after losing the previous bet. N. Carolina losing by 1 was a bit frustrating. I saw how the line moved this morning and couldnt find anything on why. Seeing that, i should have just stayed away. But like any novice, i didnt listen to myself. And then in losing, I place a 3 team parlay...Lakers ML tonight, Phillies and Angels tomorrow...$120 to win $361.73...total overreaction to a lose. I have to learn to rein in that frustration. Its what keeps me from moving forward. I know...nobody said this is easy.

                                This has been a collapse in 48 hours..just awful. There's $200
left before I have to start over. Put it all on 2 team 6pt teaser..Lakers -1, Ok St -1.5...pays $153. Just brutal.

I'm currently in a similar position:

I've been using sports gambling to fund my tuition at (UNLV). I had my friends make the bets for me until I was 21. I had no choice - I wanted to earn a degree in Computer Science but had no money to fund college (zip, zero, nada...parents are gone, I live by myself and no financial aid.). So far I'm a Junior going into senior year and sports gambling has paid for everything along the way. UNLV is about ten minutes from the strip. My latest bet pretty much covered a half semester of tuition.

I don't recommend doing it. When other kids are out partying I'm at home looking at sports lines. Hopefully I can win enough for my last year and be done with it. No 21 year old student should be betting 10k on the Bulls. I don' enjoy doing it since I know I'm missing out in my golden years, but I have to do what I have to do. Once I get a job after graduation then maybe I will fool around with smaller plays, but I know I will never reply on sports gambling again.

Saw your thread again and looked to see how you were doing. I'm not trying to be a know it all, betting can be a humbling endeavor.

I would encourage you to step back, look at your mistakes and try to refocus. Still believe, parlays will kill ya. I'm not saying I don't bet parlays, but bet them when your hot and with house money. Gambling is a game of streaks.

Look back at your bets. How many loses or wins were made by additional points gained by a teaser? How much are you paying for those bonus points? Is it worth it? How many two teams parlays have you went 50/50 on? If you were doing straight bets, on a card like tonight, the teaser (bonus points) didn't come into play. If you would have done two straight bets, you would have just been down the juice. You most likely would have the ability + confidence to pick a evening play.

I'll tell you one thing, if I was playing $100 tonight, I'd much rather have two straight bets for $50 each than (one) two team teaser for $100. Look back and do a back test. If something isn't working, stop. Ask yourself why, make adjustments. Take a break and regroup.

How do you arrive at the decision to take a side? Are you using power rankings, trends, perceived mis-matches, revenge, line movement? You seem to prefer favorites, that's all I can tell. Betting exhibition baseball is crazy. Teasing them, crazier. I'm not saving you can't find an advantage with exhibition, never tried. I would guess you would need to have a finger on the pulse and try to take advantage of late scratches or announced strategies. Coaches aren't always trying to win in exhibition. Looking at different players, lineups, pitchers and so on. I don't know. Way to much data in basketball, trends, power-rankings, statistics for me to look anywhere else.

                                          Good luck with your pursuit.

European Volleyball is where it's at if you're betting favourites. 85% win ratio for me so far this year on short price favourites there...

I am gonna take a brief break. Getting to the halfway mark & losing it all in 48 hrs was kinda rough. I think I should've cashed out $400-500, started fresh. Now I know, cash in hand is key. Having $6-700 there makes me less cautious. So I'll be coming up with a number where I force myself to payout over the next few days. I'll be back on Tues to. The goal now is $1404.

Hiatus is over. Time to give it another shot. Month is still far from over. Need $1404 to pay the bills. Have Miami -2 tonight $100 pays $66.67
