I have been waiting for this game all week. Mem is a perfect defensive matchup for the off challenged celtics. Mem will suffocate the c's here and i would not be surprised at all if mem won su here. The low ml of +162 at pinny tells me all i need to know.

I really like Memphis a lot.

They're starting to get things together. All this team has to do is get in the playoffs. They can play with just about anyone and will not be an easy out.

With Randolph they can contend in the West imo. As a Thunder fan, the Grizzlies and Blazers scare me. They have great home court advantages and are tough as nails.

I really like this play.

Tony Allen's defense keeps Memphis Grizzlies in games
Guard brings grit-grind intensity to every play

BOSTON -- About the only thing Tony Allen hasn't done so far this season is that giddy-up move he's known for while congratulating himself after a good play.

Otherwise, the Grizzlies' eccentric and high-energy guard is back on the saddle as the driving force behind the team's defensive identity.

Memphis tops the NBA in steals per game entering its meeting today with the Boston Celtics. It's been the Grizzlies' ability to force turnovers and score transition baskets that's mostly helped them stay respectable and in contention for a playoff berth in a cluttered Western Conference.

"He's been Tony," Griz coach Lionel Hollins said of the former Celtic. "He brings it every night. Some nights he doesn't shoot the ball as well as he would like, but he always brings energy and effort, especially on defense."

While Allen isn't the team's steals leader (he's second behind point guard Mike Conley), the eight-year veteran has again become synonymous with the Grizzlies' grit and grind mantra.

The Griz are the best in the NBA at holding opponents to less than 100 points given they've done so in 20 of 23 games this season. What that means is the Griz are hardly ever out of games due to their on-the-ball pressure.

Oftentimes it is Allen who provides the spark with clutch stops and a burning desire to guard the opponent's most productive guard. In a poll earlier this season, general managers voted Allen the best perimeter defender in the league.

Allen's teammates recognize him as their sergeant at arms, and gladly follow his lead.

"My whole thing is getting guys focused," Allen said. "I play with a lot of passion. I play with a lot of heart and soul. I play like this is my last. I play like I may not ever get back on the court again. I'm going to tire myself out. I'm going to be yelling. I'm going to be screaming. But I always hope that has a snowball effect."

Describing Allen's leadership as infectious seems to understate his impact. The Griz have three players ranked among the league's top 14 in steals led by Conley's 2.5 per game and Rudy Gay is 13th with 1.65. Allen's 1.83 steals (ninth) matches his career high set last season, and he leads the NBA in steals per 48 minutes.

"He's like an Army general," Conley said. "He says crazy things but goes out there and backs it up. He works as hard as he speaks. ... He gives 100 percent on every possession."

Memphis' league-best 10.57 steals are nearly one more than New York (9.6) per game, and Allen inspired.

"Defensively, he talks to everybody," Gay said. "He's always helping everybody on the court when it comes to defense."

Just affectionately call him Mr. Helter Skelter because what can make Allen's game grating also makes him great. Take the Grizzlies' stunning comeback overtime win over Denver last Tuesday. Allen missed 8 of 10 shots, was gambling on defense and making bad decisions with the ball through three quarters. But the last six minutes of the fourth quarter and the entire extra period is why, as a coach, you sometimes live with the malaise in order to get to the masterpiece that is Allen's game-changing defensive intensity.

His ball-hawking on veteran point man Andre Miller took Denver out of sync offensively. Allen forced critical turnovers and came up with a big-time block as the Griz made their run.

"Guys like Tony will always give you energy," Hollins said. "Sometimes you have to put that energy back in the game to provide a spark even though Tony may be turning the ball over or missing layups. But ultimately, when it's winning time, Tony is usually there."

He's shooting 46.8 percent overall, 81 percent from the foul line and a whopping 42.9 percent from 3-point range.

The Grizzlies' only field goal was an Allen 3-pointer during the first six minutes of the fourth quarter when the Oklahoma City Thunder charged back and took a lead last Friday.

"He's picking and choosing his spots very well," Conley said. "He's always been a great defender but, offensively, he's finding spots in the open court and he's making open shots. His scoring is definitely helping us."

Allen's offseason workouts with a shooting coach helped.

"Whenever I'm open I'm going to shoot it," Allen said. "It's not a shot that's ill-advised. It's a shot that's coming from (a pass from) one of our star players. I'm just shooting it with confidence and trying to be aggressive."

Part of Allen's persona, too, is that he arrives to work every night with a chip on his shoulder. If you don't think Allen is trying to show that last season's breakout performance in a Grizzly uniform wasn't a fluke then think again.

"I'll just put it like this: I want the whole league to know that I'm a force and I'm a help to any ball club," Allen said. "That's been my mentality since I came into the league. I'm working hard with this group. I'm grinding.

ps- the poor San Antonio performance last week urged them to have a players only meeting before encountering the nuggets.

no one is worried that Tony Allen was up at 2:00am complaining how loud it was outside the hotel and that he can't sleep ? If he couldn't sleep, wonder if other players couldn't either (since they're staying at the same hotel obviously)
