In this final edition, we focus on five teams that could become the Cinderella of the 2011 NCAA tournament.

Most non-power six conferences finished their regular-season schedules over the weekend, and some have already tipped off their postseason tournaments (Big South). We have already provided a primer for which players to watch for come NCAA tournament time. Drawing mainly from Joe Lunardi's latest bracket, and taking a cue from our colleague, John Gasaway, we present five teams our metrics believe could emerge as the darling of the 2010-11 tourney.
George Mason Patriots
The Patriots finish the regular season atop our inaugural Mid-Major Power Rankings.
Much has been written about George Mason's success this season and what similarities this squad shares with its 2006 predecessor. However, one aspect of its game has not been noted: GMU is very good at spreading opposing defenses and connecting on open looks. Nearly half of the Patriots' jump shots come off open looks, scoring 1.13 points per shot. These easy opportunities are created because a decent chunk (10.1 percent) of GMU's offense is isolation. Cam Long, Ryan Pearson, Luke Hancock and Andre Cornelius are the top four scorers for the squad and each can very efficiently beat his man off the dribble and get to the rim.
Of the four, Cornelius, a 5-foot-10 point guard, is isolated the least (only 14 possessions), but the strategy is integral to the games of Pearson and Hancock. Per scouting data, both score nearly a point per possession. It's no surprise, then, that George Mason has the second-most efficient offense in our power rankings (1.12 PPP).
UTEP Miners
According to Lunardi, UAB will be the only Conference USA squad to make the tourney. However, the conference has been extremely competitive this season (as we have detailed) and the fact is, just about any member could garner the automatic bid. And we believe UTEP may be the team to watch in El Paso (where the tournament will take place).
The Miners' defense has slightly slipped from their best mark of .92 they posted back in January, but it's only increased to .94 points per possession. UTEP's defensive effective field goal percentage ranks among the country's top 50 (45.8 percent, per Ken Pomeroy) and it's clear that in his first season, Tim Floyd has instilled his defensive mindset in his team. A key could be UTEP's interior. John Bohannon, a freshman, does not get much court time but posted his best game of the season against the Memphis Tigers (15 points, 3 rebounds). The 6-10 Bohannon has the best block rate on the squad at 5.4 percent.
Old Dominion Monarchs
As many have noted, the Monarchs are adept at slowing a game's pace (59 possessions in the Colonial) and cleaning the offensive glass. ODU leads the nation in offensive rebound percentage (45.3 percent) and tips and putbacks account for 10.1 percent of the squad's points (1.03 points per possession). Only four teams use the offensive glass to account for 10 percent or more of their points -- ODU, the San Diego State Aztecs, the Pittsburgh Panthers and the Quinnipiac Bobcats -- and all four could find themselves in the field of 68. (Yes, even Quinnipiac, second in the NEC.)
A key to beating the Monarchs is keeping senior forward Frank Hassell off the boards. The forward is the Monarchs' greatest offensive threat, connecting on 54.2 percent of his shots from within the arc. Seventy-five of Hassell's possessions have come from offensive rebounds and the big is scoring 1.21 points per possession (per Synergy Scouting Technology). If an opponent can keep Hassell off the glass and limit his post touches (teams normally single cover Hassell), ODU could stumble.

Utah State Aggies
We have mentioned how the 2010-11 Utah State squad is unique. Compared to the 2008-09 and 2009-10 versions, these Aggies are a much stronger defensive unit, limiting opponents to roughly .92 points per trip. The catalyst is newcomer Brockeith Pane. The 6-1 guard has the highest steal rate on the squad (2.3 percent) and is a decent defender when it comes to one-on-one scenarios.
Oakland Golden Grizzlies
Greg Kampe's squad seems to be the underdog of the moment, as everyone is picking the Golden Grizzlies to spring an upset. And yes, they were impressive in the Summit League, dropping only one contest and scoring in triple digits several times. Oakland also played an extremely hard nonconference schedule, taking on the Purdue Boilermakers, Ohio State Buckeyes, Michigan Wolverines, Illinois Fighting Illini and Tennessee Volunteers on the road, and playing host to the Michigan State Spartans.
However, Oakland's offense is not as spectacular as everyone thinks. Against conference foes, Oakland's PPP was 1.18 but its OPPP was a mediocre .99. The subpar OPPP stems from the luxury of leaning on senior Keith Benson, a 6-11 big who has one of the best block rates in the nation (10.7 percent). Against those six high-major conference teams, Oakland's offense suffered dramatically (.94). Oakland may enjoy a favorable first-round opponent and face a team that wants to try and run with the Grizzlies (75 possessions in-conference). But according to the evidence, it seems more likely that the Grizzlies will falter against a good defense.
