#7821roy Murphy is signing with the Boston Celtics.
Murphy told ESPN.com via e-mail that he will join the Celtics after spending much of the past 48 hours agonizing between Boston and the Miami Heat. Murphy reached terms of a buyout with the Golden State Warriors on Sunday.
Murphy also received recruiting pitches this week from Portland, New York and Orlando, sources said, but the 6-foot-10 forward was always determined to sign with a top contender in anticipation of making the first deep playoff run of his career. Murphy has played in more games (639) than any other active player without appearing in the playoffs.

#7824all teams that save their best performances for this part of the season, the stretch run of the regular season and the conference tournament.
Some teams might have underachieved in part because of injuries, off-court issues, bad luck, simply failing to meet their potential or some combination therein.
This is their last chance to salvage their season, and each year we see a handful of clubs take advantage of it.
Last year’s Notre Dame club is a prime example. The Fighting Irish were 17-10, in the middle of the pack of an ultra-competitive Big East, and most tournament analysts predicted they would be left out.
That’s when coach Mike Brey team won six consecutive and seven straight cashes for bettors as the Irish reached the Big East Tournament semifinals and secured their bid to the Big Dance.
Accurately identifying teams that are candidates for a late-season run can result in a windfall for bettors such as the one the Irish provided last year. You need a team that generally has decent talent and coaching and looks to be trending upward, but has fallen short of expectations thus far.
Here is a quick look at one candidate from each of the six major conferences:
ACC – Clemson (19-9 overall, 8-6 conference)
Clemson no longer plays the frenetic, full-court style that was fun to watch under former coach Oliver Purnell but always seemed to end with the Tigers failing to meet their potential.
Former Wright State coach Brad Brownell has taken over and installed a Horizon League-like, hard-nosed approach. When the Tigers play tough defense, they are a difficult opponent, and they could be a factor in a one-and-done format.
Big East - West Virginia (17-10, 8-7)
The Mountaineers have been plagued by injuries and poor shooting, but they are starting to get healthy. Their junkyard style plays well in a tournament format, and they have enough leadership with guys like senior point guard Joe Mazzulla, to make some noise in the postseason. A battle-tested team that reached last year’s Final Four is unlikely to go down without a fight.
Big Ten - Michigan (18-12, 8-9)
Although rival Michigan State would be an easy pick in this spot, you might find more value on the fast-improving Wolverines, who have won seven of their past 10 games.
Coach John Beilein’s patient offense can frustrate opponents and keeps games tight against teams of superior talent. And, at 17-8 ATS, Michigan has been one country’s most reliable bets.
Big 12 - Baylor (18-10, 7-7)
LaceDarius Dunn might have the best name in college basketball; the Big 12 scoring leader also is one of the country’s best players. Scott Drew is one of college basketball’s most underrated coaches. The Bears haven’t looked like team that made an Elite Eight run last year, but when they bring their best defensive effort, they are awfully tough to beat.
SEC - Mississippi State (15-13, 7-7)
Rick Stansbury’s teams always seem to start slow but finish with a flurry. Two years ago, the Bulldogs won six straight games to take the SEC tournament title and earn an NCAA bid. Two key cogs from that team, Dee Bost and Ravern Johnson, are still around, giving the Bulldogs valuable experience as the postseason approaches.
Pac-10 - USC (17-12, 9-7)
The Trojans were a unanimous pick to finish in the conference’s cellar, which made sense because they had the least amount of returning talent in the Pac-10 and an incoming class that didn’t scare anyone.
But Kevin O’Neill has cemented his reputation as a coach who makes the most of what he has, and the overachieving Trojans head into their stretch run with four straight wins and look a team that improves with every game.Comment -

#7826HOT TEAM: Columbus Blue Jackets
Columbus enters Sunday’s tilt vs. Nashville riding a three-game winning streak. The Blue Jackets have won five of six, they have points in all six on that stretch, and are guaranteed at least eight victories this month.
Three of their five wins came at home and as favorites but the club still pulled out a surprising 4-3 win at Chicago against the defending champs.
As play began on Sunday, they were still on the outside looking in, with regards to the playoffs, but they were only three points out of the eighth spot and they had at least one game in hand on the whole conference.
At the forefront of the surge, is All-Star Rick Nash, who’s played like the star the Blue Jackets need on the ice and at the box office. He has five goals in his last six games, helping Columbus score four or more goals in each of its last three contests.
COLD TEAM: Anaheim Ducks
If there’s a hot team in the bottom of the West playoff race, it probably means there’s a cold one, too, and that is true for Anaheim these days.
The Ducks entered Sunday’s game vs. Colorado on a five-game losing streak, and it’s been uglier than it even sounds. Anaheim has allowed 27 goals during that stretch including seven to Washington on Feb. 16, and nine to St. Louis on Feb. 19.
It’s safe to say this team is missing its starting goalie. Jonas Hiller is still out because of vertigo symptoms but Anaheim just recently acquired Dan Ellis from Tampa Bay. Bettors might have to take a wait-and-see approach with Anaheim once Ellis gets between the pipes.
OVER PLAY: Ottawa Senators
OK, so this might be a tough sell after the Senators handcuffed the Flyers, 4-1, on Saturday night, but don’t be fooled by 2.5 hours of hockey. We all know strange things happen on Hockey Night in Canada anyway.
What can’t be undersold is that new-look Ottawa -- with youngsters up from the AHL and a new goalie still finding his way -- seems bound to be an over play for the rest of the season.
Saturday’s win went under by a half but let’s take a look at the numbers. The under snapped a two-game over streak, yes, but Ottawa has still pushed past the total in nine of its last 11 games.
Craig Anderson has been good in net since the trade from Colorado, but remember his defense will be young and shaky the rest of the way.
And let’s see how that defense responds to a tough trifecta this week, to open the month of March: Boston, Atlanta and the Rangers. Think over, folks.
UNDER PLAY: New Jersey Devils
Well, their winning ways finally came to an end, with a 2-1 loss to Tampa Bay on Friday, but the unders just keep on coming for New Jersey.
Johan Hedberg has been tremendous in net and the offense is still slow enough for the Devils to be a consistent under buy the rest of the way. They entered Sunday’s game vs. Florida having gone under in four straight, and were in the midst of a 7-0-2 under run. That’s a quality, consistent stretch for any under player.
In fact, prior to the game vs. the Panthers, the Devils had gone over in a game just once all month.
SURVEYING THE SCHEDULE
** Just what the East-leading Flyers needed, right? Rest. Philadelphia, fresh off four games last week, won’t return to the ice until Thursday night. So, expect some rejuvenated legs, when they play host to the Maple Leafs at the Wells Fargo Center on four days’ rest.
** The Canucks won’t be so lucky. On Tuesday, Vancouver plays host to the Blue Jackets in a game which will start a run of four contests in six days. For a team that is just 4-5 in its last nine, Vancouver might want to get it together in thisComment -
