As the NBA hits the homestretch, the most definitive book to date on the Tim Donaghy betting scandal is about to be widely released.

In “Gaming the Game,” professional gambler James Battista says he rode the disgraced former referee's picks to a success rate of 70 to 80 percent.

“Bookmakers knew something was going on,” Battista says in the book, written by Sean Patrick Griffin, an associate professor of criminal justice at Penn State Abington. “These were the most respected bookmakers in the world. They didn’t cheat on the numbers, and they were very good at what they did. The lines were moving so much, and [it] wasn’t like there were injuries or anything else that could account for the big line moves.”

The author mentions one unnamed gambler who supposedly made $200 million following Battista’s Donaghy picks.

Griffin writes that during the conspiracy, 43 percent of games Donaghy officiated had line moves bigger than 1.5 points, compared to 25 percent of other games.

Donaghy, who insists he did not fix games, served 13 months in prison after pleading guilty to conspiracy to engage in wire fraud and transmitting betting information through interstate commerce.

Battista, who never cooperated with the FBI and has only given one previous interview, to HBO, received a 15-month sentence for betting NBA games based on Donaghy’s tips.

The book will be widely released on Tuesday.

The conspiracy came to light in 2007.

NBA Commissioner David Stern didn't offer ESPN.com much of a response to the book, saying only that it will be reviewed "because we want to get to the bottom of it all."

He also said, sarcastically, that he was happy the book got a limited release over All-Star weekend "to present an opportunity for a convicted felon to issue yet another tome on his misdeeds."
