THE STORY: No. 24 Saint Mary’s goal of ending Gonzaga’s run of 10 straight regular-season West Coast Conference titles could get a big boost Thursday when the Gaels visit the McCarthey Center, where the Bulldogs are 85-5 since 2004. After two surprising road losses to san fran and Santa Clara last week, Gonzaga is happy to be home again. The only unbeaten team in the WCC, Saint Mary’s remained ranked after an 89-70 non-conference loss at Vanderbilt last Saturday. Leading scorer Mickey McConnell needs to rebound after two sub-par games in order for the Gaels to increase their conference lead.

ABOUT GONZAGA (13-7, 3-2 West Coast Conference): Gonzaga is looking to avoid losing three straight conference games for the first time since the end of the 1997 season after losing 85-71 at Santa Clara on Thursday and 96-91 in overtime at San Francisco on Saturday. Senior guard Steven Gray is fifth in the WCC in scoring, averaging 15.2 points. He is third in assists with 4.4 and steals with 1.7. Forward Robert Sacre is the team’s second leading scorer at 13.9 and is seventh in the WCC with 6.8 rebounds. As a team, Gonzaga is scoring 78.2 points and limiting opponents to 68.5. Both marks are second in the WCC, just behind Saint Mary’s.
ABOUT SAINT MARY’S (17-3, 5-0): McConnell and Matthew Dellavedova combined to shoot just 1 of 9 from beyond the arc against Vanderbilt despite averaging 42.8 percent between the two of them. The Gaels have four players averaging better than 10 points per game, led by McConnell (14.6), Rob Jones (14.0), Matthew Dellavedova (13.2) and Mitchell Young (10.0), who is shooting 64 percent from the field, tops in the WCC. The Gaels are the only unbeaten team in the conference, and wins this week over Gonzaga and Portland would give them a commanding lead at the mid-point of the WCC season.
WHO’S HOT/WHO’S NOT: Dellavedova has scored in double figures in nine straight games and contributed a team-high 19 points in the Vanderbilt game. He ranks 12th nationally in assist-turnover ratio and 21st in assists per game. Jones has led the team in rebounding in 12 of the last 16 games. Gonzaga’s trio of Gray, Sacre and Elias Harris were 9 of 24 from the field against Santa Clara, with Gray and Harris combining to go 1 of 8 from beyond the arc.
KEY STATISTIC: Saint Mary's enters the game as one of the top offensive teams in the country. The Gaels are ranked among the top-10 in the nation in field goal percentage, scoring margin, 3-point field goals per game, assists and assist-turnover ratio.
RECENT HISTORY: Saint Mary’s is 4-19 against Gonzaga in the last 10 seasons. Three of the four wins came at McKeon Pavilion, while the fourth was in the final of the WCC Tournament last year in las vegas .
LOOKING AHEAD: Saint Mary’s visits Portland on Saturday, Jan. 29, before returning home to start the second half of the league schedule with games against pepperdine (Feb. 3) and Loyola Marymount (Feb. 5). Gonzaga welcomes San Diego on Saturday before playing at Portland on Feb. 3. The Bulldogs host nonconference foe Memphis at the Spokane Arena on Feb. 5.
THE LAST WORD: Saint Mary’s has not been especially sharp in its last two games against San Diego and Vanderbilt, but the Gaels realize the importance of Thursday’s game. Depending on how Gonzaga fares in the second half of WCC play, a loss to the Bulldogs could be a severe blow to Saint Mary’s chances of receiving an at-large NCAA Tournament berth. Saint Mary’s has never won at the McCarthey Center, which opened in 2004, and the Gaels have not won at Gonzaga since 1995. Gonzaga’s streak of 12 straight NCAA Tournament appearances is in serious jeopardy after last week’s losses, and the Bulldogs need a win over a ranked Saint Mary’s team to jumpstart their late-season resurgence. njured Pittsburgh Steelers rookie center Maurkice Pouncey missed Wednesday's practice and according to teammate Chris Kemoeatu, won't play in the Super Bowl.
“We are definitely sad that he won’t be able to be with us in the Super Bowl,” Kemoeatu told the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review of Pouncey, who was diagnosed with a left high ankle sprain. “Definitely I feel bad for him. We just have to win it for him.”
“We know how big this is for him and him not being able to play is definitely motivating for us to go out there and get that ring for him.”
Pouncey was on crutches and wearing a hard cast on his ankle earlier Wednesday. He was hurt in the first half of Sunday's AFC Championship Game victory over the New York Jets.
