Basketball Parlay of the Day Contest - Thursday, 1/3/08

Listen up, basketball experts. Starting Wednesday (Jan 2) we will commence with a Hoops Parlay Contest with the monthly grand prize a 22” widescreen LCD monitor. The rules are simple:

1. Check in the NBA BASKETBALL HANDICAPPING FORUM each day for the daily thread to be posted by LT Profits. Lines will be posted by 11:00 a.m. (ET) each day. Plays may be posted before that, but the official posted lines will be used for grading.

2. Posted spreads and totals are the only eligible plays for grading. Both NBA and NCAA games included.

3. Two-game parlay picks, laying 10 to win 26. Post entire parlay at same time, no open parlays.

4. Here’s the catch: Your play must include a write-up, doesn’t have to be long, just a sentence or two about why you’re making your play. Here’s a THREAD from last year’s contest to be used for an example.

5. And here’s the fine print:

• One entry per household and IP address.
  
• Must use lines posted in daily thread by LT Profits
  
• Maximum one parlay pick per day, minimum 15 parlay plays needed to be eligible for monthly prize.
  
• Tiebreaker - Win % of individual parlay legs. If still tied, combatants will carry on a head-to-head parlay match until winner determined.
  
• All decisions made by SBR with regards to this contest are final.
  
• SBR employees eligible to participate but are not eligible to win the monthly prize.

San Antonio Spurs +2 @ Denver: No one knows how bad and listless this Nuggets team is. Plenty of star power, no desire to compete. The spurs will show up even without Manu and players like Finley, Oberto, and Bonner will make a solid contribution.

Both teams coming off games last night, Portland plays respectable perimeter D. I see the final score to be something like 92-86.

Bulls/Trailblazers -- Trailblazers +3 one of the hottest teams meets an average bulls team ready for a let down.

bulls/trailblazers over 1871/2 -- since new coach the bulls have reached the century mark in every game and averaged 105 ppg and the trailblazers should win so that makes the over an easy pick for me.

Richmond +7: Beat ODU recently, a team that VT lost to. Also, Tech is just 1-3 on road. Home dog looks good here.

Notre Dame-2: Irish 8-0 at home. ND should cover the small spread.

Eastern Illinois has won their last 3 games against the spread while the Racers have lost their last 3. Eastern Illinois has lost their last 4 games but by no more than 5 points per game with 3 of those games on the road. The home game loss was a 2 point loss to Tennessee State, who just recently beat Illinois.

Rice +24.5

As much as i want to lean toward Vandy on this game, I just think they are giving away too many points. Vandy has lost 4 of their last 5 games ATS when they were a double digit favorite. All five of those games, like this one, were at Vandy. Vandy is 0-3 ATS when they allow their opponent 40+ rebounds. Rice has had at least 43 rebounds in 4 of their last 6 games. Two of those games were against TCU and Texas A&M.

nuggets -2 -- spurs dnt play2 well on the road and nuggets play well at home

chi/portland over 187.5 - this feels treacherous since both teams may have tired legs and also may easily revert back to defense-oriented play for this one, but i think they'll be able to keep the energy up since both teams are in positive mental upswings now. I wouldn't bet this, but will use it in a contest.

denver -1.5 - this one is also treacherous, fading a disciplined team like san antonio against a less disciplined one like denver. past performance bears that out, as san antonio is 4-1 ATS against denver over the last 3 years. but i think san antonio might be losing their invincible aura a bit. they are 5-6 on the road SU this year, and I think they're more likely to lose here than not. again, i wouldn't bet this, but i'll use it in a contest.

They both recently played Akron on the road, Ill-Chic lost by 6 and Youngstown lost by 20. Ill-Chic beat Depaul on the road earlier.

UCLA -2.5

Stanford looked mediocre in their game against Fresno St., UCLA has too much firepower.

Seattle/Phoenix over 216.5 - Both high paced teams, and Seattle's offense is finally looking about league average, and with Phoenix one of the best I'll take my chances with this getting over the number

Portland/Chicago under 187.5 - This is definitely more iffy in my opinion as both offense have been playing great recently, but hoping tired legs play a factor and keep this game a half court grindout game and under the number

Siena +22.5 vs. Memphis
This pick is a little risky but I like the number. Memphis is a great team but they are 4-5 ATS. Siena is averaging 81 points on the road. They shoot 75% FT on the road. They beat Stanford and lost to Syracuse by 8.

Wisconsin Green Bay -8.5 vs. University of Detroit
U of D is only averaging 56 points a game on the road. Wisconsin Green Bay is averaging 77.5 at home. U of D FT% is below 70% and Wisconsin Green Bay FT% is above 80%. I recently saw Wisconsin Green Bay in person play tough against M.S.U. M.S.U. couldn't put away the spread. I see a double digit victory.

Portland Blazers @ Chicago Bulls - Bulls are my pick. Portland plays horrible road games and 3/4 of their 13 game winning streak came at home. Their road win last night wasn't surprising because they beat the worst team in the league, Minnesota. The Chicago Bulls are much more experienced then Minnesota and if Minnesota can keep Portland within 11, theres no telling what Chicago can do

Phoenix Suns/Seattle Sonics 218 - OVER 218 .. This sucks cuz the line was originally 216. Phoenix is the Number 1 scoring team in the league averaging a little over 109 ppg. Seattle averages about 98 ppg, but being that Phoenix defense is one of the leagues worst, expect a much higher scoring game then this. Both clubs like to run the ball and take no time setting up plays.

Rested Nuggets at home is always potentially very tough opponent for any Elite team. They've played inconsistently this season, but I'll try them here as only a 1.5 point fave. San Antonio is missing Manu and they haven't been nearly as efficient on the road.

Mils two straight wins over decent comp. Otherwise they (mil) have been getting blown out by any decent competition..Look for Wright to win by 8.

Az State -2.5 My main argument again here is that spread is based on wrong factors. Oregon was supposed to be very tough but have faltered badly on road. Bookmakers still see talent and set close lines. Az State wins at home and wins big. Last 5 games at home win by average of 19 points... Including a 22 point slamming of Xavier...

The Huskies come into this game looking to start of their conference schedule with a win. They have played the tougher schedule up to this point and I believe it will show tonight. Both of these teams shoot the ball fairly well, however the difference is on the defensive end of the hardwood. Uconn is holding opponets to only 36% fg , as opposed to the pirates giving up 46%. Uconn is also 6-0 against Seton Hall, SU and ATS.

Bulls because they are heating up and getting togetehr under a new coah, while Portland is not good on the road, and has many of their recent wins against mediocre teams.

Spurs, because I think the nuggets are just an erratic team, and erratic teams dont fair well against consistant teams, and defensive teams like the Spurs. But of course I am always scared of AI, but hopefull the SA team defense will hold up around the bucket.

Shhh, that's how I plan on winning.

All plays have to be in by tipoff. So, if a player selects a game with a start time of 7 ET, any edited post after 7 ET will result in a loss on that particular play. Edited posts are indicated at the bottom of the post with a little message that reads along the lines of, "Last edited by [user name] at [specific time]."

ND has their longest home win streak in team history. I don't see them losing to a less talented team tonight. They also won't win by only a point. Therefore -2 is money.

VaTech -7
Richmond can beat anyone on any night due to the style they play. That said, they suck and VT is pretty darn good. SFlorida manhandled Richmond, and i see this game going the same way.
