I have a 250K firster who I think might be nice so I think I will run him in his 1st race in a 100k sprint STAKE. He runs a very credible race . So I look through the condition book and decide to run back in a MSW race ( where he should have been the 1st time) but I decide to run 2 turns. WTF !!!
You can't make this stuff up. The horse is probably best and probably wins but no thanks for the trainer who runs him in a 100k stake sprinting with Lasix and Blinkers as a firster. Unbelievable.!Comment -

#9455I saw that horse. Looks like he can run. But here we are with the condition book again.

#9457one slight difference to me though (have a hunch you'll disagree) is the level at FG generally lower than CD..the latter a msw probably around $120k and the field probably reflects it..about $58k for a msw sprint at FG but I realize with a horse that expensive the extra $42k of purse money isn't the prime considerationComment -

#9462yeah I agree putting in realistic spots long haul is the thing to do vs chasing big money stakes that are probably too good for them..I could see giving the turfway park stakes a try.. she didn't run bad at all in it but 2 back seems ambitious
be cool someday if one of the dutrow brothers get an army mule in their stable ..even someone like
michael pino who was mentored by rick sr..sure they'd get the most out of it's talent
The trainer should be SO proud. This horse is amazing in spite of her trainer in my book.
Hate to bash trainers but this is over the top stupid.Comment -

#9463Just saw the replay.
Yep. He shied from the left handed stick.
The jockey started out right handed and used it a couple times. No problems. He then switches to his left hand. Very reasonable. He hits him once left handed and he slides over about 2-3 feet. Then, he hits him a 2nd time left handed and he ducks away from it about 5 feet. So... the rider somehow decides that he will hit him a 3rd time left handed and the horse ducks out to the way outside. A very poor decision by that rider. What the hell did you think he was going too do???
He finally gets his stick over to his right hand, hits him and the horse takes off.
A total jockey screw up IMO.
The horse was the winner if that does not happen and it would not have been a photo.
That rider is off, a HOF rider is on. Also blinkers ON today. He should run very well. My only worry would be him relaxing early with those blinkers. They usually do enough but I doubt he has totally forgotten about that race.
A solid play IMO Madison.
Good Luck.
Didn't need the blinkers, just a rider with a brain.
Watching this blatant lack of horsemanship is nauseating. Two really nice, hard trying horses trained by two trainers that honestly, based on the placement I have seen them choose with these horses, I wouldn't let train my cat.
Just hate to say that harsh stuff but both of these choices made for these horses are just terrible IMO.Comment -

Things are so much better than they used to be. The things like this and worse I saw once a month if not more when I first started . And they were no big deal in peoples eyes. So glad that has changed.
I really do not want to post them but if I ever get the chance to talk to you Jelly, I could tell you some things that will make you sick. Not to make you sick of course, but to help you see that things today ARE better and this sort of abuse and temper tantrum crap is in massive decline. It is no longer accepted. Thank God for that.
Paco will have many sets of eyes on him now. That is a really good thing for the horses AND the sport. And for Paco. A very good rider but that temper is ridiculous at times. He's got to wise up now. We shall see.
All the best Jellymancan.Comment -

#9471Caldera Post-Race Follow-Up

Caldera exited yesterday’s big win in good order. Click here for a replay of the race.
Your colt earned a solid 82 Beyer Speed Figure for the victory—that’s a very good number to build on and right in line with what we were expecting. While we try to avoid making the comparison too frequently, Caldera did earn the exact same number this time that his former stablemate and 2024 Preakness/PA Derby winner Seize the Grey did in his sophomore debut over the same track and trip 11 months ago.
For now, we’ll see how Caldera bounces out of Friday’s race and finalize a next target in the coming weeks.

#9472Sweet Voyage Race Recap

Sweet Voyage failed to fire this evening at Turfway and was never in serious contention. She was NOT claimed.
Away in decent order, the chestnut was run off her feet a bit from there and had dropped pretty far back by the time they straightened for home. She did put in a mild and green late bid in the lane, but was much too far back at that point.
That was certainly not the effort we were hoping for and admittedly a bit of a head scratcher, but trainer Jeff Hiles did note that the winter weather and inability to train much at the farm likely had more of a negative impact on Sweet Voyage vs. those based at Turfway itself. He also believes the filly would benefit from further class relief down to the $30K level or so and should also be stretched out to a longer distance—both moves that our racing team agrees with.

..to me the idea with these is take a shot within your comfort level and maybe you get lucky ..i enjoy the process of making the picks and if I get some excitement along the way with good performances in the preps that's a nice bonus also

#9482I totally get where you are coming from Jelly. At least in todays world, these things get called out and you have HISA regulations to help monitor things. And because of HISA, I really do think Paco will straighten up and fly right with that hot headed crap he has always allowed to show up before.
Things are so much better than they used to be. The things like this and worse I saw once a month if not more when I first started . And they were no big deal in peoples eyes. So glad that has changed.

I know it’s gotten better. I always like things to keep improving. I hope Paco has learned,
but I have my doubts.Comment -

how do you think the connections of this horse feel losing her to the claim in her debut two back ? probably could've beaten msw with that effort ..interesting also it's between the best trainer and one of the other top trainers at the track ..i'll give a little slack for 2nd breaking from the rail in the mud in start 2 .. should be tough today but no secret to anyone ..I'd do a straight 194 triple which I think would return about $8 for a buck or invest 3 with a $2T 194 and $1T 149.. main thing here is the question and not the bet lol
perfect spot also being eligible off running for a tag in her debutLast edited by JBEX; 01-20-25, 07:56 AM.Comment -

I am not sure how "A other than" races are written there but if this horse wins, there is a chance that it stays eligible for the "A other than" if this is considered a starter allowance. It would need to read non winners of a race other than maiden, claiming, or starter. That's how it was back in the day. Don't know about now and there.
This is how you are supposed to do this stuff if it is available JBEX. Love the placement.Comment
