The key to remember is that the % of take out in horse racing is so high. No horse is an overlay.
For laying horses it is wise to match bets between the two favorites. Low odds good returns.
Then your profit factor is when longshots beat them both. Thus you have to break even in picking the lay horse in a the match race.

he doesnt want it to be 0, when you lay a horse you are essentially acting as the bookmaker and if that horse wins you payout the winnings eg. i want to lay (want it to lose) a horse at odds of $5 for the sum of $50, if that horse loses you win $50. But if the horse gets up and wins you pay out the bookies side and end up paying $250. Make sense?

In Australia today, the conditions were treacherous! The track was practically mud, I can recall two very short price favs getting beat. $1.90 and $1.75. I didn't place a lay bet on either of them though, chicken.

yup - i make sure to never place a "back" bet on muddy/sloppy tracks .... graveyards for faves though - plenty of laying opportunities.
