Only thing that worries me is his grappling. Means seems pretty wild and might get caught by a sub. But then Magalhaes hasn't been exactly tearing through the competition in Australia with submission wins. He's spent a week or two at Power MMA with Bascynski, Bader and A-Train working on his wrestling. Bader was saying he's a beast.
what gabe says.

#111Diego Sanchez +310 > Jake Ellenberger (4/5)
I'm 3-0 picking Ellenberger fights and hope to be 4-0 after this one. Jake Ellenberger lost to Carlos Condit in his UFC debut then went off to have 5 unimpressive wins. Sure, he had some nice knockouts and what-not, but what I mean by 'unimpressive' is the competition or situation the match-ups presented... The Jake Shields KO has really taken him to another level in the eyes of the public, but I see it as a bit of a flukey KO. Shields' head wasn't in the fight and Jake got lucky and caught him early. He barely beat Rocha, and I'm not impressed by KO's over Howard/Pyle/Pierson. I don't think Ellenberger has faced as tough an opponent as Diego Sanchez since Carlos Condit. And I think Sanchez is tougher than Condit. A lot of people expect Ellenberger to knock Sanchez out, but I really don't think so. If he wins, it will be by Decision - but a TKO stoppage due to a cut is not completely out of the question. I can see Sanchez ending this with a rear naked choke late in the fight or possibly a ground and pound stoppage, but more than likely he will take a Decision. It is my opinion that people are really over-estimating Ellenberger and really under-estimating Diego Sanchez. I think this fight should be a lot closer to even odds, so getting Diego at +310 is just RIDICULOUS!!!!!!!! Hit that all day long, like it was the finest piece of ass you've ever seen!! He is going to prove he hasn't gone anywhere and isn't going anywhere. He is going to prove that he's the real contender for the title and no one should have counted him out. The Dream comes alive on Wednesday. GLComment -

#112Diego's standup blows. Ellenberger has enough tdd to keep this fight standing and exploit Canchez's below average striking.

#113I did hedge my Ellenberger wager with Canchez by dec at +497 though. So if he wins it better be by dec or I'm fukked.Comment -

#117based upon what? Kampmann was taken down several times by an exhausted Shields
Ellenberger will be a huge WW compared to muffin top Sanchez plus has a much better wrestling pedigree than Kampmann. Diego is going to have to rush forward with his crazy spurts and push Ellenberger against the wall and hold him there/try to trip him.Comment -

#118Nothing wrong with a contrarian play Gabriel...
I still don't have a play here, but folks shouldn't overlook Diego's tenacity, resiliency, and Leonard Garcia-like ability to score with the judges via wild (yet ineffective) flurries... This is Diego Sanchez... if Jake doesn't finish him, and it goes to the cards... all bets are off ;p (though, the fight is in Ellenberger-country)
On paper, betting Ellenberger almost seems too easy here... Maybe I'll keep my eyes peeled for live betting options on 5dimes if they have 'em for this...Comment -

BTW- Diego did not look good at the weigh-ins...
He wasn't ol' angry Diego with the game-face... That disappoints me. I don't wanna see him all nice n friendly with Ellenberger before the fight. First Diaz with the handshake, now Sanchez...smhComment -

#122I don't mind your dog play here gabe, but I I'm going to have to disagree with you on this statement. Kampmann is a very technical, well rounded fighter who is good at everything. Ellenberger may not be as well rounded as Kampmann, but he's a great wrestler, is much more imposing physically than Kampmann, and has much heavier hands than Kampmann. Ellenberger presents a set of skills much different than Kampmann's. Not saying Sanchez won't pull off the upset here, as I will probably stay away from this fight, but I think Ellenberger is a much tougher opponent stylistically than Kampmann. Sanchez's best chance of winning this fight is grinding a decision using his wrestling and strong BJJ top game, but I don't think he will be able to take Ellenberger down early. And if Sanchez is not patient and tries to bumrush a fresh Ellenberger, he can get into some real troubleLast edited by Vitooch; 02-14-12, 06:50 PM.Comment -

#123You guys seriously think Kampmann beat Diego?
Sure, Diego looked like hell after the fight, but he did edge a win. I personally thought he edged it out and deservingly won the fight.Comment -

#124According to FightMetric
Significant Strikes:
Kampmann 77
Sanchez 51
Sanchez attempted 15 takedowns, and successfully landed ONE
It was close, but I think the amount of unsuccessfully landed takedowns and the sheer volume of Kampmann's landed strikes won him a decision. It's close though.Comment -

#125I'm rewatching the fight and Sanchez at 170 looks much slower and pudgy. Haven't seen the weigh-ins yet but if Sanchez comes into tomorrow's fight in that shape, Ellenberger will bully him.Comment -

#126Sanchez will need to take Ellenberger down if he wants his hand raised. I honestly do not see that happening. Ellenberger's stand up will be a night and day difference imo. Just my thoughts though.Comment -

#127yes, but he may also tire himself out and invite diego into the center. if so, hes losing the decision. I have a lot on ellenberger as well, but i have hedged with diego dec. I have learned my lesson, the hard wayComment -

#129Just wondering how many times you've watched Diego vs Kampmann? One of my favorite fights and I've seen it at least 5 times. No way Diego stole that decision. I thought he(Diego) won after the first time I watched it... heart doesn't win you fights. Beating your opponents ass controlling the cage, and landing more strikes is what wins you the fight.
Gabe keep up the great work. Even though we disagree on most picks, I'm not gonna hate on you.Comment -

#132If you really mean that, i will consider giving this thread the name "what gabe said is bullshit". Are you, and i am serious when i ask you this, retarded? Did you see the post fight inter. with diego? It looked like he was run over by a truck.
If that fight went for one more round, it may have ended in a doctor stoppage ..Comment -

#133Diego scored points for blocking punches with his face tho brah. Its what Condit should of done...he'd of deserved the decision if he'd of stood in front of Diaz and let him punch him for 5 roundsComment -

#135I scored the fight for Kampmann, but I wasn't shocked by the decision. IMO, Kampmann let the fight slip away. I don't agree with the statement of "don't leave it to the judges" as some guys are extremely hard to finish, but don't leave it that close. Kampmann was definitely ahead for most of Round 2, but Diego came on strong. I gave Diego Round 3. I'm just not near as shocked as a lot of mma fans that Round 2 was judged for Diego.Comment -

#136I didn't see that fight live and was always under the assumption that Kampmann was robbed but when I watched the fight, I felt Diego edged it out.
Getting that much damage done to him and still doing what he did... that says a lot. If anything, it makes Kampmann look bad for not being able to put him away and makes him look good for taking all that damage and still beating up Kampmann.
Some fighters cut a lot easier than others. Just 'cos he was a bloody mess doesn't mean he got beat.Comment -
