I agree 100% with hoff. After watching the replay and rewatching the fight it was a legit stoppage. Daley was not defending after the faceplant. He was about to take 5 more shots with his head laying flat on the canvas.

#282The difference in Diaz not getting tko'd is that he has the best chin in mma. He got rocked a few times by punches that have ko'd most of daleys opponents. BUT he defended and instarecovered every time. Nick has become one if the best and most exciting fighters to watch. I don't care if gsp alves fitch etc would beat nick, id pay to watch all of them.Guess who's stackin' gold and silver? THIS GUYComment -

#283Also, in other strikeforce news:
Rumors began surfacing just after MMAWeekly.com’s initial report about a possible Strikeforce pay-per-view in July, that Henderson could face former Pride champion Fedor Emelianenko on the card. Fedor is considering a drop to light heavyweight for his next bout.
Fedor vs Hendo...that would be a GREAT fight. Please make it happen!Comment -

#284Nick is awesome but he fights so stupid!!! He's got the belt, so maybe he just feels like he still has something to prove because he did poorly in the UFC?Comment -

#285Nick standing with Paul definitely wasn't the smartest move... but he still put him on queer street and I loved every minute of it. I thought Diaz was KO'd for a minute there and started biting my fingernails.Comment -

I disagree strongly with this. Here is a replay I found on you tube. Daley does not look like he is totally limp to me. I do not see 5 more shots to the head, I see a view from behind Diaz where we can't really see what is happening, he does throw several punches, then a side view where I see one miss and maybe one connect, but Daley's hands and feet are still in the air and it looks like to me he is "intelligently" defending himself.
I'm not trying to be argumentative or an asshole but I don't think this was a good stoppage. I don't mind if ref's want to stop the fight in a situation like this. I just want consistency. We see fights all the time that go WAAAAAYYYY beyond this with no stoppage. Nelson-Dos Santos come to mind, I think Roy may have brain damage. I realize it's tough to choose when to stop a fight, but you got to give these guys a chance to stay in the fight. I just don't see what else Daley could have done to "defend" himself. That's all I have to say about this. No more ranting from me.

#288Daley could argue that maybe the fight should of been stopped wen he face planted Diaz the second time, Diaz was faced down curled up gettin hit for at least 3 seconds I reckon.Comment -

#290Yea. Easily could have stopped the fight when diaz fell on his face. I think the stoppage was kind of bs myself. Diaz looked worse off than semtex did at the end. Especially with 3 seconds left.Comment -

#292Watch this youtube on the end and I agree that even IF the ref did not stop it, that Daley was done. Daley was flat on his back for 16 seconds before he had to be helped to his stool. When a fighter falls and hits face first, it is usually a sign that he is quite out of it. If your legs are dead and you don't get your hands up to break the fall, the fighter is usually done. Then Diaz pounced and landed three big rights IMO maybe one could have been glancing.
If Daley thought it was an early stoppage, do you really think he would have stayed there on his stool like a slab of meat? He was too dazed to even bitch. That, to me, was one of the reasons that I don't feel too bad about the stoppage. Remember the ref stepped in with six seconds left. Daley easily would have taken a couple more bombs before the bell.
Here is the whole fight. At 4:00 on you tube timer Diaz gets nailed and is hurt. He went down similarly to Daley but within 7 seconds he avoided taking any finishing bombs and got back to his knees, and then recovered real quick. Either way it was a great fight and props to Diaz.

#293I don't disagree. But should have been allowed to play out. And this was not like some rookie ref here. I def belief that refs no who the organization wants to win, and either consciously or unconsciously react upon that. Diaz was given a chance to recover and semtex....... Not so much. Don't forget, Dana doesn't want Daley to succeedComment -

#295Here's the difference as I see it: Diaz was rocked and dropped at the 1:25 mark and he went face down. Diaz immediately brought his right hand up to cover his ear and side of his head. This simple move could be construed as "intelligently defending himself" Daley swung on him and did not land anything solid enough to finish him. By the 1:19 mark Diaz had already scrambled to his knees. And from there he cleared the cobwebs and went on fighting.
When Daley was rocked he stumbled and went down face first. He rolled to his back when Diaz pounced. Diaz landed three rights, two of which were very clean bombs in under five seconds. Daley was flailing with his arms which in the live fight could be mistaken for "intelligently defending" himself. The ref had a better angle and could see the fighters eyes. On viewing the second angle you could see he was more flailing than trying to block punches. At this point Diaz was advancing into better position to land more bombs. Big John stopped Diaz from striking with six seconds on the clock. Had he not, Diaz would have certainly landed at least two more big ones and maybe four or five more. As it was, Daley needed two people and 16 seconds to go from flat on his back to a seated position on the stool immediately after the fight.
As to those who say Big John should have let the round expire. I would doubt that in the heat of the fight that he was aware of exactly how much time was left on the clock. He saw a fighter in trouble and he stepped in and kept the fighter from taking anymore damage. I thought it was completely reasonable and legit.Comment -

Excellent work, man. I agree 100%.
When a guy loses money on a fight, it often skews his perspective on the stoppage. My hat is off to the bettor that has the ability to admit his analytic errors rather than blame refs or judges for the bettor's mistakes.
Of course there are times when the ref or judge may be in the wrong, but this was certainly not one of those occasions.Comment -
