i actually wish i hadn`t gone over to player`s talk and read that thread...watched about 45 seconds of that video..about all i could handle....i`m aware that trace had beefs with guys in the forum, but, that`s cool...it`s a gambling forum...i respect all mma opinions and appreciate that guys take the time to post and help the board with their opinions... trace included...

.but that video?.......for all we know,he`s some jersey shore wanna be white kid who has gangsta fantasies...all he had to do was sit the camera down and walk in front of it....

        but it`s not even trace...i don`t have a beef with him...it`s a free country....if that`s him,i wish him luck....

it`s the morons that flocked into his thread kissing his ass because he has a 20X 20 room with a "tile floor"(lol) a couch,a loveseat and a flat panel t.v.....that`s what we aspire to?....in america (most western countries i`d guess) folks on welfare...collecting food stamps....they own or rent a room with a couple pieces of furniture,a flat screen and a cell phone....

i think what really grated was the fact that he posts that he did time(real or imagined) for a "rape beef?"....seems proud of it....and the kids in the forum are in awe of him for being a criminal......that`s scary,imo..i knew we were living in bad times, but,c`mon

iif that`s who trace is,so be it...good luck going forward...you`ll need it..

but the yo-yo`s that came into his thread?...that were so far up his ass that they could smell his shampoo because he`s supposedly "gangsta`"...a criminal...has a room, couple pieces of furniture and a flat screen t.v. and is proud of going to prison because of a "rape beef"?....well,there are toenail clippings that people have clipped and left on their hotel carpets this morning have a far far far greater intelligence than they do...

i`m just shaking my head...in sadness..

Yes anybody admiring somebody for their "gangsta" ways is ridiculous and partly why I'm not a big fan of the whole Diaz brothers gangsta vibe in MMA! And you're right the "saloon" and "players talk" is full of morons! To be fair tho, I don't think Trace necessarily tries to glamorize his criminal past, he just trolls around a bit and takes the bait when aforementioned retards call him out!

Ha Do not worry, I see all those before me as an individual, the whole concept of judging somebody based on Geographical location is absurd to me! Moreover, you've always been one of the most insightful and objective guys on here Rocky so no chance of being tarred with tht same brush!

I'm gonna have to go with Travis Browne but I wouldn't go putting too much on it, but that's just me.

You ever seen that episode of the Simpsons where Homer becomes a boxer? His opponents beat the shit out of him until they get tired and that's how Homer wins. Stefan Struve got a lot of Homer Simpson in him. Kid's got heart but that's just a nice way of saying they got their ass kicked in.

His fight with Christian Morecraft is a great example of that. Morecraft beat the piss out of that boy in the first round. I'd even score that first round a 10-8 Morecraft, but all it takes is one punch from Stefan in the second, and the next thing you know someone's on queer street.

And the fact both these dudes like to strike increases the possibility of that happening. I just hope Browne fights smart and takes Stefan down in the first round getting that TKO with some ground and pound. Stefan's guard is painful but he's got a high retard quotient.

haha Can see the Homer Simpson comparison! And yeah I think Browne would be better off taking him down and finishing what Morecraft started.

You know what a turkish ride is? That's the easiest way Browne can beat Struve without taking a lot of damage. Struve's guard is weak, little or no wrist control.

Yeah Brilz used it to good effect in 2nd round of Nog fight I believe? I mentioned in another thread how I think Struve is particularly susceptible to attacks from side-control

Anyone here see Brother's Justice? It's a mockumentary following Dax Shepard as he tries to make an action flick. There's a short scene filmed at Renato Magno's school over in Santa Monica that made me chuckle.

My little cousin works his thai and boxing there, He's only 18 so he's not real familiar with any of the names. Tried asking him a few question about the instructors but he wasn't too helpful.

Some good sparring though from what he tells me........Might have to go bloody up some noses tomorrow.

Both of those look fine, but school choice depends not only on finding the right school, but probably just as important does it fit your needs.

I have yet to encounter a legitimate school that didn't allow a prospective student to either sit in or take one free class. I highly suggest going to these schools and see how they run the class, get a better look at facilities, as well as instructors.

A couple of things to look for:

                                                            1. Who is actually teaching the class? If you go to a school because of a certain instructor, make sure that person actually teaches the classes. If he/she doesn't, then find out who is teaching it and look at their level, experience, and teaching style. It might not necessarily be a bad thing, it just depends who it is. A lot of schools bring in black belt instructors, usually from Brazil, and rotate them in and out. So who is listed, may not necessarily be the person teaching at school.

John's Gym is affiliated with Drysdale. Find out how many times Drysdale actually comes down to the gym to teach or host seminars. Are there any other big names who may train there occasionally?

                                                            2. Class size and experience level is probably as important as who you're learning from. If a class is overcrowded, you're not going to get much interaction with the instructor. Also, if you're at school with a lot of students, is the actual size of the school large enough to make sure you get time to roll? I've seen some places where, people had to take turns rolling because there wasn't enough mat room.

Small classes might not give you many opportunities to roll with decent guys which could be just as bad. If you are at a small school, what's the experience level of the students? Unless you're placed in a class for novices, the more experienced guys you have the opportunity to roll with the better. BJJ fundamentals usually take about three months to learn and your growth as grappler after that really depends on your training partners. Look for open mat times, where students even from other schools can get together and just roll.

So check out Relson's place and John's Gym. But I would also look into Gracie Barra, South Austin Gym, and Vasquez Acadmeny.

Been looking at the 133 card and I don't foresee any fights where a submission win is likely outcome. What do think chances are of Rory Mac subbing Pyle? Considering a flier play on MacDonald Sub of the Night. Pyle has been susceptible in the past, like Brock Larson's arm-triangle at 98. Interested to see what MacDonald's strategy will be, on one side I'm thinking he'll be happy to stand and strike with Pyle as Pyle's guard is aggressive and dangerous and one of his biggest threats, but then on the flipside Rory was more than happy to toss Diaz around and go in to his guard, so his confidence in his own ability probably means he will look to take Pyle down at times. Any other fights on the card where you can see a submission occurring? Pace has an aggressive submission game, maybe he can choke out Menjivar.

Don't know about Rory subbing Pyle. Not that he doesn't have the skills, it's just Pyle got pretty good defense.

As for the other fights where a sub could occur? Well, there are number of guys on the card who can and have used submissions in the past. I mean, Dennis has changed up his style a little bit, but it wouldn't surprise me if Hallman won by armbar. Both Menjivar and Pace have legitimate submission skills, still when you get two guys who know that area well it does generally turn into a position battle. And I wouldn't rule out Sapo Natal, especially since he's going up against late replacement.

Seriously though, where's your level of experience with grappling or wrestling? Are you training Gi or No-Gi? Do you have a school?

If you're completely new to this, the best advice I can give you is what I heard when I first started training: check your ego at the door.

It's going to suck for a while and that's just the nature of learning something new and your body will fail you at times. So it won't be heard to get pissed off, you might take it a little personal, but quash that shit at the start. You let it turn into an ego thing, you'll stop learning and most likely is that you'll quit. Best analogy I can make is probably learning how to swim. You're going to feel pretty helpless on the mat or in a pool at the beginning. You'll definitely burn yourself out quick expending a lot of energy on a lot of wasted movement. There will be times where guys will control on the mat, dominate you positionally by either rag dolling you or getting their hooks in and stretching you out, and it'll look like they're doing it pretty easily.

I've seen countless guys come in and get humbled, they might stick around for a couple of classes but they never last because they let their ego get the best of them. Give it three months. It'll take three months of training just grasp the basic mechanics of BJJ. But once you get the fundamentals, your growth becomes a matter of how much time you put on the mat and who you grapple with. You want to grapple against better guys, it's the only way you'll ever get better.

Make sure you come in with a clean Gi, don't be the guy poor hygiene. You're going to get burns from the Gi as well as the mat, expect that. And trim your nails on your fingers and your toes please! Nails can cut and get caught on the mat or a Gi. Neither is good.

There's a thing called White Belt Syndrome: where someone new will get their opponent in the guard and clamp down in full guard hanging on for dear life. The whole point of the guard is to have an active, attacking guard meaning sweeps or subs, as well as looking to improve your position. There's a Blue Belt Syndrome as well but that's something to worry about later.

When you roll, get your shoulders off the mat, establish wrist control, break your opponent's posture, and then work your guard. Again staying in a closed full guard accomplishes nothing. And be a good training partner! You're trying to work shit out on the mat, make sure you give the opportunity for you partner to figure it too.

I'm sure there's something else I'm forgetting but that's what I can tell you off the top of my head.
