The replays show that the corner threw the towel. Worse still, the cornermen asked the corner inspector (appointed by the commission) to stop the fight. When he was climbing to the ring to inform to the ref, the referee asked him to go down. Only after that, in a desperate measure, they thrown the towel.

Possibly the ref did not recognize who was climbing, but his behavior was wrong. Fortunately, there were no consequences.

I guess they chose Mercante Jr. as a link to make this fight more "historical". In the last fight at Yankee Stadium his father was the ref. Also at the introduction they remembered the parents of both Cotto and Mercante.

He was wrong in many instances. I am also a professional arbiter in other sport, and one of the first rules is not only being neutral, but also being perceived as neutral. Mercante saying to Foreman "You are a game guy!", "Suck it up!", "You’re fighting hard! I don’t want to see you lose like that!", "You all right, champ! Come on, walk it off!". Had Cotto lost, they would claim that the ref was clearly biased.

And I read somewhere that Sparkle Lee, referee in in two undercard bouts was even worse.
