I have fought 5 amateur mma fights and have trained for years in muay thai and jiu jitsu so I think know how fighters fight... It is all about the style they are comfortable with. When i would fight I would protect myself by covering body from body shots. I preferred my hands up but if someone working my body i would protect it especially against a good fighter that likes to kick. Silvas style seemed to work well throughout his career.

Low hands help defend against takedowns, to block a body shot you should be using your elbows and twisting your body, unless someone is actually boxing or using a philly shell defence imo
