People get knocked out with their hands up and their hands down.

They're just two different styles.

There is no right way or wrong way to fight. It all comes down to personal preference. Anderson Silva had a lot of success with that hands down style earlier in the UFC. His hands being low would invite people to swing on him thinking Silva's guard was down and he would use that to counter.

The harsh truth is there is no safety anywhere in that cage no matter where your hands are.

Silva wouldn't have gotten KO'd if he had his hands up against Weidman

You can keep your hands down if you're much faster than your opponent and can keep your distance but it's a bad habit since you're used to having them down so you keep them down even when distance closes. That's when you get KO'd

Silva didn't want to wrestle vs Weidman so he dropped his hands to bait Weidman into a stand up war where he thought he would have the advantage.

Silva could have carried his hands high & been taken out by a body shot. What then. You would be saying Silva should have carried his hands low to defend body shots.

Weidman is good at body shots, are you new? Silva keeps his hands down to draw them in for counters and is one of the best ever. Nothing wrong fighting with hands down.
