No, that was a knee to the body. The thigh didn't really land. It's illegal to throw a leg strike of any kind to the head of grounded opponent. There's nothing in the ruled that says only strikes landed with the knee cap or something are illegal.

Yeah, and not sure how many times I have to say hitting someone with the lower thigh is a "knee" strike. 9/10 times "knees" land with the lower thing, whether they're standing or on the ground. Rarely do knees actually land with the knee cap. A lower thigh strike IS a knee strike.

I take your point, but I still think it's a bit of a grey area. If a fighter attempts a knee on any grounded opponent... and happens to connect with the thigh instead of the knee cap, it's not like the ref is typically going to make a distinction. He'll still call it a foul.
