Gotta love Fuld - great defensive outfielder - superb eye at the plate - hustler - always plays hard. He also showed proper respect for the game in the 9th tonight - knowing he needed only a single to hit for the cycle he still drove hard for a double in what was then a 15-4 game. Hitting for the cycle is something special to players and you can be sure a lot of guys would have found a way (excuse) to hold up at first base in that situation.

Of course - the clearest evidence that Fuld is a solid player and person is the fact that the Cubs got rid of him.

The Contrarian selection goes to the New York Mets who are playing against the streaking Rockies. The streaking angle goes to teams who have won 3 in a row. Streak players oftentimes jump on the 3 streak team to ride out the streak. Most accomplished baseball gents will tell you that a legit streaks really starts at 4 or 5. So when the squarish guys see the 3 streak, they pile in a little more than normal.

As a lifelong, diehard, idiot Cub fan, I first saw Fuld play as a September call up in 07 when he proceeded to introduce himself to the bricks behind the Wrigley ivy while snagging a liner. I proudly wear my Cubbie blue Fuld #27 jersey. One good thing Hendry did though was to trade him to a place where he was going to get a fair chance to win a job - something Lou never game him.

Ironically, Joe Maddon takes more of a NL approach to the game than did Lou. Uncle Joe appreciates on base percentage and knows how and when to push the running game. Fuld is much more Maddon's type of player than he was Piniella's.
