TWG's Baseball Picks For the Rest of the Season
    TWG's Baseball Picks (Through Sept.)
I'm new around here, so I thought I would throw out the picks that I'm going to be going on the rest of the season (with explanations, of course.). I will have at least 2 picks a day, at the very most 5. I will start with today, September 23, 2009.

    Picks for 9/23/2009
    1. Cardinals RL -1 1/2 (+135) (Smoltz vs. Norris) (Betting 3 units; to win 4.05U)
The Cardinals are already the favorite in this game, but I'm expecting another blowout. Norris faced the Cards earlier in the season, and went 7 shutout innings. Since the Cardinals have faced Norris in the past, I'm sure they will have more of a book on him (especially batters who have actually faced him) and get to him early and often (his ERA on the year is 5.03). Smoltz has been off and on, but had a strong outing against the Cubs on the 18th (6IP, 2ER). Expect him to pitch somewhere in the same realm as the 18th, especially against a team that will have a few players out there who will be trying to impress the new astros manager for a starting job for 2010.

    2. Braves ML (-130) (Hudson vs. Pelfrey) (Betting 5 units; to win 3.85U)
First off, the Mets are extremely injured. They're well out of playoff contention and will surely have some AAA players out there. Mike Pelfrey of the Mets will be starting his 30th game of the season, and his ERA is ABOVE 5 (5.10). He let up 4 earned against the Nats in 7 innings, so expect a worse outing from him tonight. (Gave up 8 earned against Philly 2 starts ago.) Tim Hudson has been good since coming back from Tommy John surgery. 4 starts with a 1-1 record and a 3.70 ERA. Expect his ERA to drop and he should go 2-1 after facing a hurting Mets club without any confidence (they couldn't tie the game up after being down 1 run and having 2nd and 3rd with 0 outs!)

Those are my two bets for today. Agree to disagree,or go along with me.

    Cheers!

        3. Twins ML (+105) (Duensing vs. Buerhle) (Betting 3 Units; win 3.15 U)
The Twins are in the heat of a playoff spot with the Tigers, being only a couple games back. Mark Buerhle is 2-2 with a 5.28 ERA against the Twins this season and is 1-6 in 11 starts since his perfect game. Expect the Twins to come out firing against Buerhle and expect Duensing to shut down anything left of the White Sox offense, as they have lost 3 in a row and have been outscored 15-6 by the Twins in the first 2 games of the 3 game set. Also, Duensing is 4-0 as a starter this year with a 1.70 ERA, and one of those starts have come against the White sox, where he pitched 7 scoreless innings. Even though the Twins are the slight underdog, look for them to leave the South side of Chi town with a sweep.

Just a quick update. Looks like the Cardinals brought out their "A-" lineup while sitting Brendan Ryan and starting Julio Lugo. The Astros have J.R. Towles catching tonight (cannot hit at all) and Geoff Blum at 3rd for irregulars.

The Braves have brought out their best lineup, and the Mets once again have a couple of bench players in there.

The Braves lit up Pelfrey for 3 in the 2nd. So far so good! 3-0 Braves!

Atlanta is up 4-2 and has threatened in every inning but the 5th.

Minnesota is up 5-0 and still threatening in the 4th.

The Cardinals are down 1-0. currently in the top of the 4th.

                          Picks for September 24, 2009:
                          1. Boston Red Sox RL (-125) (Buchholz vs. Lerew) (Risking 12.5u, win 10 u)
The Red Sox should have no problem demolishing the Royals yet again. Buchholz has been very solid through the year and shouldn't have much of a problem suppressing Kansas City's offense. On top of that, they've scored 9 runs in 2 of the 3 games they have played KC this series. On top of THAT, they're facing a pitcher not called up fresh from AAA, but from AA! The Red Sox should clobber this guy without a doubt. They should cover the run line easily with a quality start from buchholz.

                          2. Seattle Mariners ML (-160) (Hernandez vs. Romero) (Risking 5u, win 3.12u)
The Mariners have their workhorse going tonight in Felix Hernandez. He has a good shot at winning the Cy Young and he rarely loses and is very stingy with his ERA (16-5, 2.45 ERA). Although they're facing a touch pitcher in Ricky Romero, the rookie has an ERA over 6 and a record of 1-4 in his last 5 starts. The Mariners are obviously the better team to begin with here and having their ace pitching should almost guarantee that they put their "A" lineup on the field to give him an even better shot at winning the Cy Young.

                          3. Reds/Pirates Over 8 (-120) (Arroyo vs. Morton) (Risking 4u, win 3.33u)
Both of these pitchers have an era over 4 (Morton's is at 5). Arroyo is typically hit and miss with his starts. With his last start being a quality one, I'm expecting this one to be not so quality. Morton is already 4-8 with a 5.00 ERA. Both of these teams' bullpens aren't very good, so expect runs to be scored off of them.

                          Risking 21.5u
                          To win 16.45 u
Be on the lookout for 1-2 more bets tomorrow afternoon/early evening (Most likley the afternoon)

Here's to looking forward to another winning day!

                                          4. Philadelphia Phillies (-135) (Happ vs. Suppan) (Risking 7.5 u; win 5.56 u)
I'm gonna make this one short and sweet. Happ is 6-2 with a 1.91 ERA when pitching on the road and the Phillies have one of the best offenses in the MLB. Their offense should smash Suppan as his 5.92 when pitching at home with a record of 3-7. Happ has a good chance at being the NL ROY. Also, Suppan's career numbers against Philly are 3-6 with a 6.13 ERA. Phillies should win this one easy.

The Bats weren't working too well for Cincy and the Pirates, so I lost that bet.
