the ebb & flow of variance (in alternating waves of positive & negative) are caused by the ebb and flow of "sharp" and "square" results...the last few days is a very strong "square" period...temporarily killing the value-hunter while (also temporarily) rewarding the chalk-eating squares

the squares, suffering from OJWTBS (obsessive "just win tonyt baby" syndrome) lose over the long haul as they typically pay more for each unit they win than they should...and similarly they lose more units on the plays that fail...by putting Winning first, they accept sub-optimal prices which both decreases their gains and increases their losses...

the sharps, persist with faith in "value"...that over time, prices paid on all positions (both winners and losers) are crucial...so over time their losses are a little less expensive and their wins a little more lucrative...by putting prices first...their gains are increased and their losses decreased

results ebb and flow--sharp with $-gains, then square with $-losses--but if all your picks are driven with long-term price-value in mind (rather than with an impatient "just win the damn bet tonight" compulsion)...over the haul you're a winner
