🩸 Ronda Rousey vs. Gina Carano Prediction, Picks & Odds: Play the Overs in a Tyson-Paul-Style Fight

Ronda Rousey is a heavy favorite, but the market is overpricing an early finish, so we’re fading that and taking the Overs.

Our Ronda Rousey vs. Gina Carano prediction and MVP MMA 1 betting preview backs Rousey as a -535 betting favorite on Saturday at Intuit Dome in Inglewood, Calif. The fight airs live on Netflix as the main event of Most Valuable Promotions' first MMA card, with the main card starting at 9 p.m. ET.

While I’m backing Rousey to win, I’m not touching the moneyline at that price without a plan. The Overs provide the best opportunities here. We’ve got two women who haven’t fought professionally in a combined 27 years. This has all the makings of a slow, cautious, grappling-heavy affair.

💰 Ronda Rousey vs. Gina Carano best bet: Fight to start Round 2 (+100)

I'm blown away that this line is sitting at even money. Everyone seems to think this fight ends in a flash, and the books are right there with them. But think about what we're actually watching here. Gina Carano is coming back after nearly 17 years outside the cage. This is the equivalent of Mike Tyson returning to fight Jake Paul, and we all saw how that played out. People hammered the KO props in that fight, too, and it ended up being a complete non-event where nobody really gave it a go.

Women's MMA finishes are already tough to come by. Now add the fact that neither of these women has competed professionally in ages, and you don't know how tired they'll be, how cautious they'll want to play it, or how much they'll want to pace themselves. +100 for this fight to see a second round is easily my best bet on the card. I'm going with three units.

I expect a feeling-out process to open this fight. Rousey will probably touch with the jab, Carano will move with her, and both women will be nervous under the bright lights of Intuit Dome with this spectacle swirling around them. I think we'll see some light boxing, plenty of feints, and a lot of hesitancy before they finally bump into each other.

Once they do, Rousey will look to close the distance and work the clinch, maybe land one of her classic judo trips to get Carano to the mat. From there, this becomes a grappling match. I would be pretty surprised if Carano can get up from bottom position at any point in this fight. She's going to take damage down there. Whether it's enough to finish her is the question.

Rousey could ground and pound, go for an armbar, or win by TKO due to injury. We don't know how durable Carano is after 17 years away from the cage and a rough grappling session on her back. But I suspect this fight goes longer than the market expects.

Prediction: Rousey to win (-535 via DraftKings)

💡 How I'm handicapping Ronda Rousey vs. Gina Carano

Rousey is understandably favored. She's younger, she was better in her prime, and her grappling pedigree is on another level entirely with that Olympic judo background. The moneyline at -535 isn't offering much value, so if you're as confident as I am, you ratchet up your unit size. If you're not, this is probably a moneyline you can skip entirely.

Where I'm really making my money is on the Overs. The market seems to think this fight ends early, and I'm just not seeing it. These are not modern professional athletes at the peak of their craft. These are older women coming back into the cage after long absences. They're going to be rusty. There's going to be less power, less pace, and a lot less action than people expect. If you want to push it further, go for Over 2.5 or even Over 3.5 rounds. I think that's totally in play.

That's also why my method of victory pick is Rousey to win by decision at +1300 on FanDuel. You can size that one small. Rousey could absolutely surprise us and lock in a submission early. But I'm a betting man, and I'm not putting my money on a quick finish when every variable in this fight points toward a slow burn.
