Cory Sandhagen vs. Mario Bautista Prediction, Picks & Odds: Count On The Full 15 Minutes Today

Sandhagen's takedown defense has cracked against the division's best grapplers, and Bautista is the fresher, hungrier wrestler on the best run of his career. We're taking Bautista as a live underdog, backing him by decision, and leaning hardest on this re

Here's our Cory Sandhagen vs. Mario Bautista prediction and UFC 329 betting preview. Sandhagen is a modest -135 favorite to beat Bautista in Saturday's bantamweight rematch at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. The fight lands two bouts before the Conor McGregor vs. Max Holloway main event on Paramount+, with the main card starting at 9 p.m. ET.

I'm going away from the chalk here. Sandhagen carries a beatable 56% takedown defense, and the division's best grapplers have made him pay for it, so I'm backing Bautista as a live underdog and adding a play on him to win by decision. The bet I trust most is this rematch going the full distance, and if you'd rather lay a little more chalk than the underdog plays, that's the spot to stock up.

💰 Cory Sandhagen vs. Mario Bautista best bet: Fight goes the distance (-200)

The fight going the full 15 minutes is my best bet, and both men make a strong case for it. Sandhagen has been stopped only once in his entire career, way back in a 2020 submission loss to Aljamain Sterling, and since then he's gone the distance against the very best the division has to offer in Petr Yan, T.J. Dillashaw, Umar Nurmagomedov, and Merab Dvalishvili.

Bautista is cut from a similar cloth right now, since his last several wins over Jose Aldo, Patchy Mix, and Ricky Simon all went to the scorecards. When you put two durable, technical bantamweights in front of each other, the finish tends to be the exception rather than the rule. The over 2.5 rounds is juiced all the way to -270, but the goes-the-distance market at -200 is the cleaner number for the same basic idea, and that's where I'm putting 2.5 units.

This is technically a rematch, but the first meeting tells you almost nothing about Saturday. Sandhagen submitted a short-notice Bautista with a first-round armbar back in January 2019, and both men are completely different fighters seven years later. Sandhagen is the more polished pure striker of the two, a rangy switch-stance technician with a sharp jab and a diverse kicking game, and the only fighters to beat him over the past several years have been elite names like Yan, Dillashaw, Umar, and Merab.

Bautista's clearest path runs through the grappling. Sandhagen's takedown defense sits at just 56%, and we watched Merab Dvalishvili put him on the mat over and over in their title fight. Bautista is the more active, more insistent wrestler in this matchup; he shoots and finishes takedowns at a higher rate than Sandhagen does, and he's a jiu-jitsu black belt who loves to climb onto the back once he gets there.

Sandhagen can absolutely still win this, and win it clearly, if he keeps the fight standing and carves Bautista up at range behind that jab. That real path to a Sandhagen decision is why I'm not laying a big number on the underdog. Given the wrestling edge and the plus-money price, though, Bautista is the side with the value, and I think he grinds out enough control time to steal it.

Prediction: Bautista to win (+125 via BetMGM)
