Although Colorado Avalanche blueliner Cale Makar remains the favorite to win the Norris Trophy as the NHL's best defenseman, there is still time for challengers to push for the award.
Makar is the reigning Norris Trophy winner. He put up 28 goals and 86 points in just 77 games last season before adding 29 points in 20 playoff games en route to the Avalanche's Stanley Cup win.
Now 24 years old, he's following up that campaign with 18 points through his first 14 games and is a heavy favorite to repeat as the Norris Trophy winner.
Here is a look at Norris Trophy odds now, with odds via our top-rated sportsbooks.
2023 Norris Trophy Odds
Norris Trophy Picks: Favorites
Cale Makar (+165 via FanDuel Sportsbook)
A prohibitive favorite at the start of the season, Makar had a relatively slow start. He had seven assists, but zero goals, through eight games.
Since then, Makar has put up three goals and 11 points during a six-game point streak. It is that kind of production that makes Makar the leading candidate to win the Norris Trophy.
Makar could very well be the best defenseman in the NHL, but if he runs into injuries or his production does not stand out above the competition, that could open the door to other viable candidates.
Adam Fox (+850 via FanDuel)
The winner of the 2020-21 Norris Trophy has probably been the best defenseman in the league thus far.
Fox has always been an elite play driver and that has continued this season. The New York Rangers are getting 65.3% of five-on-five expected goals and outscoring opponents 16-9 with Fox on the ice. He has five goals and 19 points through 17 games.
If Makar’s production slips, Fox is lurking for another Norris Trophy, and it makes sense to get him at +850 via FanDuel instead of the +400 at Barstool Sportsbook.
Erik Karlsson (+1400 via FanDuel)
The media will eat up the narrative of the grizzled 32-year-old Karlsson turning back the clock. It sure looks like he is closer to his best days than what he has offered the San Jose Sharks since he was acquired in 2018.
Karlsson has 10 goals and 24 points through 18 games. While it is a safe bet that he will not keep scoring on 18.2% of his shots, Karlsson is driving the Sharks' offense much like he did during his prime years with the Ottawa Senators. If he stays healthy and scores better than a point per game, Karlsson would have a chance to win his third Norris Trophy, and first since 2014-2015.
Karlsson's odds have shifted dramatically. Before the season, Karlsson was priced at +10000 at Caesars Sportsbook and Barstool to win the Norris Trophy. Now, BetMGM has Karlsson at +1400 and those are the longest odds among the top sportsbooks.
Norris Trophy Picks: Contenders
Victor Hedman (+1200 via DraftKings Sportsbook)
The towering Tampa Bay Lightning defenseman is always a Norris Trophy contender, but Hedman would be trading on his reputation to get consideration this season. Hedman has one goal and nine points through 14 games, and the Lightning are getting just 46.0% of five-on-five expected goals with him on the ice.
There is lots of time for Hedman to get back to more typical production, but he has not earned a spot among the contenders with his play thus far.
If you want to take Hedman, catch him at +1200 via DraftKings or PointsBet, rather than paying the premium with the +700 odds still offered by Caesars.
Roman Josi (+1500 via Barstool Sportsbook)
The Nashville Predators captain won the Norris Trophy in 2019-20 and was runner-up to Makar last season.
Josi started the season with just one assist in seven games but has scored three goals and nine points in nine games since.
Miro Heiskanen (+2800 via PointsBet)
Stepping into a prime role on the Dallas Stars' blueline with John Klingberg leaving as a free agent, Heiskanen has elevated his offensive game. That helps get a player noticed.
Putting up nine assists in the past seven games gives Heiskanen 12 points in 13 games for the season. The Stars are controlling 53.6% of expected goals and outscoring opponents 12-6 with Heiskanen on the ice during five-on-five play.
He is on the verge of losing his secret contender status. While +2800 via PointsBet is still enticing, Heiskanen +1600 at DraftKings and +1700 at Barstool.
Norris Trophy Picks: Long Shots
Dougie Hamilton (+3500 via Barstool)
After a disappointing first season with the New Jersey Devils last season, Hamilton is now a No. 1 defenseman on a team that is suddenly a powerhouse.
Not only does Hamilton have five goals and 14 points in 16 games, but the Devils are getting more than 66.0% of expected goals and outscoring opponents 16-8 with Hamilton on the ice.
Barstool has Hamilton at +3500, which is a significantly better price than the +2500 being offered at FanDuel.
Shea Theodore (+3500 via PointsBet)
A consistent play-driving force on the blueline of the Vegas Golden Knights, Theodore has three goals and 12 points in 17 games. That scoring rate probably needs a boost if he is going to challenge for the Norris Trophy.
Nevertheless, Theodore controls play, with the Golden Knights earning 59.6% of expected goals and outscoring opponents 18-8 during five-on-five play with Theodore on the ice.
He is priced at +3500 via DraftKings, PointsBet, and Barstool, but +2500 at Caesars and BetMGM. That is a significant difference.
