Once pre-tournament favorite Jannik Sinner lost unexpectedly in the second round at Roland Garros, that blew the doors wide open for No. 2 seed Alexander Zverev to win his first-ever Grand Slam. But standing in his way is a Next Gen rising star in No. 26 seed Jakub Mensik, who will be no pushover.

My French Open prediction for the Mensik vs. Zverev semifinal backs the German, who will be desperate not to waste this golden opportunity to seize his first Grand Slam title. Zverev is as high as a -500 betting favorite, and would surely be favored over either of the other two semifinalists if he were to reach the final.

Along with my outright Zverev prediction, I make the case for him to cover the games spread for more value from a prop perspective.

Here's my pick to win the French Open men's semifinal, and why I'm choosing Zverev:

Alexander Zverev ML (-423)

Zverev is rarely a victim of upsets at Roland Garros, as he has gone 29-1 in his last 30 matches as a favorite at the French Open. Through each player's five wins to get to this point, Mensik has been on the court for four hours more than Zverev. That would be an issue regardless of who the lower-seeded player was facing, but is impacted even more against the fit Zverev, especially when Mensik was struggling with cramps earlier in the tournament.

Zverev made easy work of another young upstart in Rafael Jodar in the quarterfinals, combating the Spaniard's solid 75% first serve percentage to still generate 10 break points opportunities (and four overall breaks of serve).  

Zverev is just 1-3 in French Open semifinal appearances, but he has never been this heavy of a favorite in any of the previous four.

Zverev has started fast in his matches recently, winning the first set in each of the last eight. If he does so again, he would start to place doubt of an upset in the Czech's mind, as Mensik has taken the opening set in four of his first five matches.

The veteran Zverev has used his craftiness to exert his dominance over less-experienced players, as he has covered the game spread in each of his last seven Grand Slam matches against younger opponents. Furthermore, six of Zverev's last seven completed matches at the French Open have gone Under the total match games line. That suggests that when he is winning sets, he is doing so in convincing fashion with lopsided scores after breaks of serve.

Mensik's best chance of hanging with Zverev is to ride his powerful serve and holding service games long enough to force tiebreaks. But even if Mensik were to steal a 7-6 set, Zverev's ability to wear him down over time with longer rallies means we could see a 6-1 or 6-2 set late, which the German has won by in all of his deciding sets except one to this point.
